Yule had very dark thoughts about Owen while they lived together, but he never gathered the strength to lie a finger on him, not even when he had the chance. It's one of the reasons why he didn't want Ragnar to kill Owen. He couldn't do it himself, so he wasn't going to get Ragnar's hands dirty over a problem he could have solved but didn't.

Owen grew up in the forest with his grandfather, but he was killed by a pack of wolves (not Ragnar though). Yule lived with them too, and when he was around, Owen behaved better. If he was going to hurt Yule, he did so while his grandpa wasn't around. The old man didn't really see Yule as a person (he agreed to allowing Owen to remove his claws, for example), but he wasn't a sadist like his grandson, so at least Yule never had to worry about violence with him. He usually spent days camping around the forest though, so that gave Owen plenty of time to do as he pleased.

That's just context in my head, but those details will never appear in the comic.
