Upcoming Change to Subscription Plan and iOS Tax

Some of you might’ve heard about Patreon's upcoming change regarding a “Subscription Tax” when using the Patreon iOS app. Apple has informed Patreon that, starting in November, they intend to start collecting 30% of every subscription made through the Patreon iOS app.

This means that, if you’re using the Patreon iOS app to subscribe to multiple creators, you will incur +30% tax each time when you reach the subscription date for every creator you subscribed to.

For that reason alone, DO NOT use the iPhone/iPad Patreon app to start/restart your subscriptions. Joining through a desktop web browser or the Android app will NOT be subject to the fee.

Another incoming change to my Patreon is: the subscription plan I currently use (collecting the money on the 1st of each month) will no longer be available, and I will be forced to switch to a ‘Monthly Subscription’ model (this means collecting the money on the day you made your subscription on each month). Patreon is being forced by Apple to only allow this method of subscription (presumably so they can incur +30% when you are subbed to multiple creators.)

I know from the last poll that many of you prefer my current subscription plan, and now I understand why (paying on the 1st of the month for multiple creators in one go is very convenient.) But Patreon wants to stay on the iOS app store, and has to bend to the demands of Apple.

Just to reiterate: the subscription plan changes will be implemented in November 2024.
