'Meat': Comic for 2019
Added 2019-01-02 05:45:48 +0000 UTCHere we are in 2019 and I have made a resolution:
To finally get a werewolf comic going and as luck would have it a twelve hour round trip to Wisconsin over Christmas with not much to look at through the state of Illinois, lead me and my soon to be husband to discuss ideas. Somewhere at the start there was mention of werewolf employment which lead to a wider discussion but in the back of my mind I kept thinking this question: "What is the ideal werewolf job?"
My husband came up with an idea I thought silly at first: butcher shop. Like werewolves go out get the meat, maybe even are proficient at selecting the good meat from the bad. More I thought about this the more the idea took form. We even came up with a werewolf whose hunting skills only came to getting squirrels and small animals. I came up with an idea for a timer set for which werewolf can actual go out and get the actual meat in under five minutes. Picture timer, so and so we need a deer. Zoom. Comes back with deer. Ding. Awww Joe beat you by thirty seconds.
This whimsical idea could do a comic by itself but I wanted more. Sure it's cute and all, but pardon the pun, where's the meat? Enter in reality and I thought long and hard on various concepts and ideas. The end result is a comic called by it's birth and in part the subject matter: "Meat"
Basic idea is werewolves have been out of the closet for some time at least twenty years and even though courts and the Feds have granted 'protected' status to them, integration into human society still has it's problems. Adding to this tension is the infamous Black Island Incident (little Easter Egg but an event that both sides don't want to repeat), human fear, and werewolves still guarding a few secrets of their own. Enter Howling Meats: The Freshest Cuts own and run by werewolves serving both werewolves and humans alike for their beef, chicken, pork, fish, and small game needs. Facing this new business model is Simon our main character, brought in to help the werewolves with deli functions (who knew no one wanted hair in their cheddar) and to show they aren't specieist either. However not everyone in the suburb of Sycamore Hills isn't all that accommodating and there is always the watchful eyes of various government agencies ready to close them down.
I am hoping the comic will reveal a realistic take as well as provide a nice social commentary. The focus will be on the butcher shop and its members however as they try and fit into a community that some want them, others don't, as they themselves tackle their own lives as werewolves.
For you patreons this will be first hand glimpses into sketches, story ideas, layout pages, and of course final completed pages will be posted here. I will also throw out the occasional patreon only reward too, cameos too are possible.
I am really hoping this goes well and is well received and I thank you all for your support on this and my art. You've all made a part of this possible.
