Blocking
Added 2025-07-21 18:00:04 +0000 UTCOne of my favorite tasks for crowd control is blocking. And while I showed this quick clip of all the steps to training blocking in the Deep Dive last week (along with some of Denver's training towards this task and other behaviors you can teach with a rear foot target foundation) I wanted to post it here as a quick reference for those specifically searching for this task!
If you need more instructions, definitely check out the Rear Foot Target Deep Dive Part 1&2 for specific instructions.

That's awesome that he's chosen to do a helpful behavior. Just be careful that what you're not seeing a protection behavior vs. a trained neutral behavior. Some dogs can be naturally suspicious, so we want to make sure we don't reinforce guarding type behaviors in service dogs.

He will even do it when we are walking and someone starts walking to behind us, which is helpful because I have PTSD and can get freaked out if I don't know someone is behind me. So, he lets me know. It only becomes a bit annoying if he decides he doesn't want to move until they pass us, which sometimes, he does. We are working on it. He has a stubborn side. 🤦🏼♀️

I do add a backup cue to the rear foot target once I've shaped the backing up behavior without a verbal cue.
