Engage/Disengage Dog Distraction
Added 2025-09-01 12:00:12 +0000 UTCHey folks!
I caught this little moment of real-life engage-disengage/offered attention while I was filming for another video in the parking lot of a shopping center. A husky had come by and done a bit of staring at Denver and then walked in the direction you can see Denver looking.
The first little bit is some displacement sniffing on the ground in response to the dog walking by. But because he's had a history of engagement, you see him offer that first check in which I mark and reinforce to initiate the game.
Now in the engage-disengage game, when a dog is first starting out, we would mark for looking at "the thing" or the distraction. But Denver has played the game enough times that I wait for part 2 - the offered attention. I wanted to show you this because it's a good example of how quickly we can go from a dog distracted by another dog, to a dog that's locked on and no longer looking back at the trigger, ready to work - less than one minute lapses - totally worth the time it took!
I have found over the past month or two as Denver is squarely into adolescence, I've had to pull out this game several times around some tougher distractions. Revisiting skills is always an option! That's why I love to have a big toolbelt to choose from as needed!
Being able to get focus in this way is a much better option than trying to correct the dog into paying attention. The dog offering engagement in response to a distraction is always better than having to beg for it/try to prevent them from looking. It does take a lot of practice though for offering attention in response to a distraction to be in their repertoire, so get out there and have some fun around distractions!
If you haven't learned about the engage disengage game yet you can see a video on it here.

Have you worked on playing the sounds super low volume in home and pairing with high value play like tug? I would start at low volume and increase slowly over long periods. It's important that the sound of kids predicts something good happening.

2025-09-02 20:03:50 +0000 UTCMy service dog trainee Tommy does very well except for certain things like kids screaming even far away. He shuts down and won’t even take bacon or steak. I have tried your previous video similar to this with no change. I have tried dopamine box to try to desensitize him build confidence . No change. With his vest on he will do just about anything I ask him to. It’s not forced but it’s OK. I’ll do it. Any ideas how to get him out of this mindset? I’ve tried sitting next to playgrounds just sitting there calmly to desensitize him. Other than this, he is rock solid. Thx

2025-09-01 18:26:14 +0000 UTCMy pup is still living full time with his trainer and she does this regularly. I spend time with him/them numerous hours a week and I've started to work on this myself. I made the mistake of taking him into Costco at a busy time. I quickly learned how this can help. We did not stay long. Fortunately he quickly let me know that he wasn't comfortable. I immediately moved him to a quiet aisle in the store, worked on engage/disengage, after giving him lots of comforting hugs, and we easily left the store without incident. Thank you again and again for sharing your knowledge with us.

2025-09-01 15:28:12 +0000 UTCEngage/disengage has been a great addition to our training. I have used it for specific circumstances, like other dogs but it has helped in general life as well. If my dog sees or hears something unusual he checks in with me. I pay attention to his movements. I am deaf and losing my vision and he helps me be more aware of my environment.

2025-09-01 14:17:01 +0000 UTCGreat catch in the moment, Denver is doing great! My shepherd also shows that sniffing displacement behavior. It really started after he was attacked, and in the beginning it was almost impossible to get his nose up when other dogs were nearby. We had to start very far away and celebrate tiny wins. The engage/disengage game has really been a gift—it’s helped him feel much more secure around other dogs.

2025-09-01 12:17:14 +0000 UTCThis one's so good! I've been practicing this the last few days with my one year old golden and he's picking it up so well. He's super social and gets very distracted/fixated on anyone walking by, especially other dogs, but has started offering attention to me already, even with other dogs around. Thank you so much for this gem 🙏🏻
