After dozens of attempts (nice way of saying failures) I finally captured some red sprites last night. 4 of them! Dim, yet brilliant red flashes exploding over thunderstorms. The bright full moon made it very difficult to balance the photo settings, thus the sprites are extra dim in the photos. I have invested 3 storm seasons, thousands of dollars and 10's of thousands of miles to capture those little red squiggles in the stars.
RED SPRITES were discovered in 1989 by accident, though reports of them have been traced back to the 18th century. They are electrical discharges that occur around 50 miles above thunderstorms. We are still trying to unlock their exciting mysteries.
ALSO shot some 4K footage of harvest ants doing their thing and a massive black widow.
TODAY I'll be slowly moseying to Nebraska for tomorrow's storms there or in South Dakota. Along the way I'm hoping to find some ring-necked snakes. Reptile Youtube channel "Smetlogik" whispered of a town between here and there that's supposed to be crawling with them.
THIS TRAIL has been extremely productive. I've been running and gunning non-stop the last five days capturing all sorts of crazy storm modes, vortices, lightning, wild life and scenery. It's gonna take a couple months to sort it all out. I'll be posting sneak peaks as they are processed. Upper tiers, get ready for your first high res photo (Hint: Memorializing this historic day) and a new song download.
I'm Having such a great time out here. Sending you all a thousand thanks.
