This is a scene I shot yesterday near Scott City KS. The RFD dropped, wrapped and cut a clear slot around a scud sucking lowering. It looked like a brief tornado might have occurred. A ran into another storm chaser and he said "that was a tornado." But asking a storm chaser if a suspicious cloud is a tornado is like asking a barber if you need a haircut.
TODAY I SPED UP THE VIDEO and ramped up the contrast to try and confirm if this SLC was truly a tornado. (Remember SLC is Scary Looking Cloud). I watched it over and over a dozen times and then POW! I SAW IT!!!
A MYSTERY I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED was revealed before my eyes! Like the sliding rocks in the Death Valley salt flats... I caught it on camera... the Sprinkler moved a little. I've always wondered how they move, when they move, if they move. It seems the wheels are on some kind of timed motor and ever-so-slowly they begin to move in unison, make a revolution or two before stopping again. I would have never noticed this if the video wasn't time lapsed.
AS FOR THE POSSIBLE TORNADO, It takes on the shape and is in right spot, but I can't make out any rotation. I'm currently calling this a ground tasting wall cloud.
OTHER DISCOVERY... I need to clean the dust off my camera sensor.
TODAY I took the day off in Stratford TX. Gonna play in the New Mexico upslope storms tomorrow.
