NEW VIDEO Tonight

FINALLY, after about 12 months of research and production we are ready to upload our TLE video explaining the science of sprites, jets and ghosts.  Paul Smith has shared extensive archives of the greatest sprite and secondary jet captures I've ever seen in this educational piece.  I used some of your money to license a few gigantic jets from Frankie Lucena to help give a more thorough explanation. We also have a contribution from storm chaser Scott Curren and lightning scientist Tom Warner also helped oversee the script.  I'm super excited to officially announce the discovery of our new TLE in this one.  Thank you Patrons for all your continued support!

NEXT STORM CHASE???

There's always a chance I bail to chase the storms near Houston tonight and not get this video uploaded as scheduled.  Tomorrow there appears to be a chance of tornadoes in the Austin TX vicinity where storms interact with each other (mesoscale accidents).  Other than that, I didn't see any forecastable tornado events in the models until June 5th or 6th, but I usually don't put much stock in the models beyond 6 or 7 days.  Who knows, maybe it will verify.

Really enjoyed this video...and learned a lot to boot. I do have a question - how far does a person need to be from cities and their associated light pollution to have a decent chance at seeing sprites? Thanks!

Ryan Koetter

I'm going to make a concentrated effort to capture me some sprites on camera this monsoon season. In general, I'm way too close to a storm to catch the activity up there. I like to be up close and personal with night time storms as they make for more dramatic lightning photos. But this year I'll make a point of aiming at some far off storms and see what I can get from the storm fairy menagerie. Awesome video, as always, Hank. You da man!
