Butter side up or butter side down
Added 2018-02-15 11:31:29 +0000 UTCSo, here's what I'm thinking for the new characters in Episode 2: two Scottish clans of birds: one living in the trees and one living on the ground, the tree birds wear kilts with a vertical tartan pattern and the ground birds have a horizontal pattern. They have been feuding for generations over the patterns of tartan, al la the big-endians and little-endians of Gulliver's travels.

This little trick requires asymmetric tartans but would be very difficult to spot (part of the fun I suppose). I am wondering if it might be just a little bit too subtle.

No, not subtle at all. After all, cultures have been feuding over small things like this since the dawn of time. I find it quite interesting to be honest.
