Regarding Regarding Spoilers

Alright, probably shouldn't post to Patreon when I'm frustrated. Sorry if I called you a baby and said I hate you. I don't think you're a baby, I don't hate you.

TL;DR: the Spoiler jokes are over, you don't have to worry about spoilers.

Being a content creator is frustrating sometimes in a way that most people just kind of don't understand. I'd imagine most jobs are. I have no idea how frustrating it is when the espresso machine breaks at a coffee shop.

That said, a lot of the stress of creation comes from a need to pivot to new content fairly regularly. When Elden Ring first came out, interest was peaked, then it sloped down for a long time. Until the DLC was announced, then interest peaks, and slows down. DLC is released, interest peaks to an all-time high, but guess what- then begins to slope down.

The DLC is the final peak for Elden Ring. There won't be a second DLC to reignite interest. We are now only going to be sloping down, and that is concerning. I believe there's still plenty of gas in the tank, but there isn't another station we'll get to fill up at until Fromsoft announces another Souls-Adjacent game. Realistically? That's 2 years away. And I think that's an optimistic guess.

So in the interest of me continuing to be able to pay my rent, I need to be able to make content that isn't Elden Ring, much in the same way that I needed to make content that wasn't D&D. We can't stay still, we can't just make one kind of content, we need to make a variety.

I've expressed variations of this in videos, and am often met with "yeah, we'll watch whatever you make!" which is great. But it's also not an accurate assessment of where the audience is at. The fact is, most of you probably don't actually want to watch me play other games. That's ok, I don't blame you for it.

Nonetheless, its stressful when we try to play other games and that doesn't work. "Why is Phil upset about a 2 month old video flopping?" because it's scary. It's scary to think I won't be able to pivot or branch out. To be honest, it makes me very afraid.

Which is where the anger comes from. Not fair to any of you, and for that I'm genuinely sorry. My frustration is with a system that offers no sense of stability, and forces me to jump from one lily pad to the next, with no idea whether or not it will support my weight, or I'll simply sink and drown.

Eventually we will be trying new games again, but it won't happen in the near future, as things are still a little tight. I'm worried we won't be able to grow and they will just become tighter. But that's my problem, not yours. The spoiler jokes will not be in future videos, and I'm going to try to work on not getting as upset with the comments.

Except people who said Messmer's Orb is good BECAUSE NO IT THE F**K IS NOT. EVEN WHEN YOU CHARGE IT THE DAMAGE IS MIDDLING AT BEST FOR HOW LONG IT TAKES TO CAST, SO IF YOU DO THE FAST VERSION AND IT DOES LESS DAMAGE THAT'S WORSE. ALL THAT IS TO ASSUME THE BOSS LETS YOU FLY UP WITHOUT HITTING YOU WITH A STIFF BREEZE. I SAID I LOVED THE FLAME SERPENT, I'M NOT TRYING TO JUST HATE ON SPELLS, THAT ONE JUST ISN'T GOOD.

Comments

definitely valid, alot of people don't handle it well when a creators tries something different, I for one love it, your style of comedy and witty humor and word play is something really enjoyable and could pair well with any game I liked the hades and another crabs treasure videos so excited to see what you'll make next

Lillian Blackheart

You really need to grab a PC copy, I use a PS5 controller so it would play the same and you can do randomizer content, seemless co-op, or like me you can play full conversions like convergence mod. I’d be willing to donate a license if you have a steam account and a pc that can run it. Alternately, just do leftist commentary content on a 2nd channel. It’s what I subbed for anyways. Also remember, there’s no end to user generated content, I make my own mods regularly when what I want isn’t available. I made Easy Parry when ER was a couple months old and people still pester me to update it every game version so there’s still plenty of interest in mod content.

Daniel Stepp

I love spells as a concept... they look cool but most suck in application. Id love to see some other souls content if your ever down for it bro.

Allan Burdette

I honestly can’t even imagine man; I’m sure I’d be scared too. And I’m sure it feels like anything is a gamble. That said, I love your charisma and style and I love watching let’s plays with your spin of challenges. So I vote go with what you’re excited about and go from there.

Jessica Fig

It broke my heart when I a video you mentioned you wanted to make bloodborne content but were worried it would flop, you've got every reason to be upset and scared, my dude. Thanks for making amazing content, I hope you can make those bloodborne videos some day, I bet they'd be legendary.

GayUndead

I’ve watched the lechonk video and thought it was good. Whenever I have downtime or when I sleep I’ll play your Elden ring playlist the scripts you make really outshine other Elden ring creators . Also when you get political I kind of enjoy your takes because you attribute to obvious reasoning that gets missed by so many. Outside of that I do hope you eventually touch bloodborne or seikiro maybe lies of P if it ever becomes accepted as a commission option then I’m sure I or someone else will pay to see “Tulok plays bloodborne”

Elias Rivas

Okay. Okay. I'll admit Messmer's orb is objectively terrible. BUT. It looks cool as fuck. I wish it was as good as it looks. But I am easily distracted by shiny things.

FoxyDean

As a consumer, it's a bit tricky when confronted with videos by creators I like but which are about stuff that I'm not interested in. While I generally love Phil's style and delivery, so much of the content is framed around in-jokes referencing specific aspects of the video's theme, when the theme is outside of my wheel house, I generally don't feel as obliged to watch them. I go to Phil's videos because I want to watch something that is going to make me smile, maybe laugh, and feel like I'm a part of an in-group. If the video feels like it's about something I'm not likely to find funny, I know that I'll feel like on the outside of the in-group, and won't enjoy the content as much. This was true for the Aang video, which was ok, but mostly unmemorable for me because of a lack of context for the script. Similarly, I haven't watched any of the Pokemon themed content on the channel because I just have no experience with that world, and I know that those jokes and references wouldn't mean anything to me. The nature of humour is that it is always relative. There are youtubers who are particularly good at introducing new stuff to their viewers, and whose videos I'll watch even if it's about a subject I know nothing about, but that's almost always the antithesis of comedy, which really demands some foreknowledge of the material. Mark Brown's "Game Maker's Toolkit" is always fascinating, but rarely makes me laugh aloud.

Linsel Greene

It’s alright. Jobs are just stressful I don’t blame you for getting upset. Thanks for apologizing but I also really don’t blame you. I like your content and I like your jokes. Even though I love your elden ring stuff I’ll watch pretty much whatever by you. Because you’re funny, and I’d say pretty cool.

Hastur, All Clad in Yellow

I know I’m late to posting this and you probably won’t see it but you are by far my favorite creator you are constantly on my second monitor. You’re human which makes you more enjoyable to watch you talk about what you don’t like sometimes we disagree (Spell enjoy here) (Although I hate Mesmiers orb) but it just makes me enjoy your content more. Also a humble suggestion from a mere patron could try doing a Fortnite video it almost feels like all of the FortHight jokes were building up to it.

William Dow

Very much appreciate this apology/clearing the air. I was almost ready to cancel my patreon sub over the last post, but Tulok has once again shown that he is a mature adult (under the considerable pressures of a hectic and flighty industry).

Tara McLeod

Seconding revisiting old builds! If Phil still has the old files kicking around, having a glance at how an old build performs in just the DLC might be a great, shorter vid that takes less time to make, amidst the "every video is now 20 minutes longer and takes 10-15 more hours to create" meta of the DLC.

Tara McLeod

All my homies hate messmer’s orb

Joel McCarroll

As someone that doesnt like elden ring i dont watch your videos because of the game also haven't you already made a post like this recently?

Autistic Raccoon

i have no words of comfort for you in regards to the landscape of content creation. Its a hell factory and I hope your wider audience grows more receptive to new games. I'm gonna upgrade my patron tier. Rooting for you.

Ralph M

also thanks for the first Hades vid it finally convinced me to play the game myself. Amazing, thank you

LarsSnareMaster3000

I would love to see you play other games like lies of P or ds1,2,3 or whatever. I can't imagine the stress and anxiety that such an unstable job brings. Honestly sad to see that other games just don't appeal to the audience/ all mighty algorithm. You have inspired so many cool builds in ER for me that ended up being a lot of fun. But at the end of the day I watch for the excellent humour, pacing, editing, the great needledrops and of course the for Harris lands or whatever they may be called. Also your lore segments were amazing analysing FS symbolism like no one I've seen before. Woulld definitely watch an entire lore video from you. Keep it up Phil I'm sure you'll find a solution

LarsSnareMaster3000

and in the end, the first spell fromsoft ever made that allowed you to literally dunk on enemies, was the one who ended up being dunked on

Rain Pross

Mr Barb., I came because of the Elden ring and my hyper fixation on beating the game (which I was able to do thanks to you and your awesomeness and smartness), but, myself and I am sure many others are here to stay for your amazing personality and humor. Thank you dearly for all of the laughs and for all of my HR violations from looking "x" up on my work computer.

Thomas Painter

I'm a fellow content creator with a different game in a different medium but I completely understand this pressure in a way many do not. Being "locked into" your specific niche is tough when that niche is not a guarantee to survive or to be able to sustain you for a long time going forward. I wish I had an answer for you as to how to weather that issue but to be honest I'm struggling with what I make as well and am worrying about what will happen when I eventually have to switch gears. I don't have any answers, I'm sorry Tulok, I wish I did. Just wanted you to know that at least one of your audience fully understands this from your perspective and is here to help support you in the long run. <3

Hextoler

Thanks. I get it. it takes a real big person to say something like that. so your cool I really did watch those videos, but I totaly understand that you had those stress. Could other soulbornes let you strech into other games? something closer to what the people like? I'm sure you have thought of that. just trying to figure something out

Marsgreekgod

As a staunch spell enjoyer, messmers orb is gods awful, I'd rather use scarlet aeonia, which still isn't even good

Aiden T.

That's a very sincere apology and a very earnest and vulnerable message about the things that are worrying you about branching out of Elden Ring content. I'm just one They but my support doesn't change, even if you stopped producing content altogether. I know what I'm able to give is a fraction of the time and effort that goes into making even one video, much less one or more a week. And as a person who has been professionally in content for over a decade, it's truly impressive to me that you and your editor manage to produce such consistent, high quality, well scripted and well edited work every week. I know it's frightening to have Elden Ring running out of road, but y'all should be proud of what you've done so far and I'm excited for whatever you do in the future.

G. Brett Williams

I can imagine that’s scary as shit, but I doubt I’m alone in saying that I enjoy watching you interact with a game, any game. And I feel like I heard that there’s another kingdom hearts coming out soon, just saying…

Aleks Lotz

Phill i personally hate you too , I only pay for patreon so I can guarantee you know 🙏🏼<3

Billy D

Man I don’t care what you post Phil you’re a g in my book and I’ll watch anything you throw out

Hunter Freeman

You are totally good, sorry that you have to deal with such frustrating things. You were talking yesterday in the stream about how you have to subject yourself to hundreds and dozens of peoples opinions and I respect you so much for taking that incredibly hard decision. Thanks for sharing your talents!

Duckwaffles

I watch whatever you post. you could poll us to see what the majority of us would watch for a variety stream and/or YouTube vid. just my two cents.

Jonald Penn

Honestly branching out into somewhat more obscure but fun games in a Let's Play style for streaming with more polished videos later may help. It seems like many others do it successfully and you write good jokes which would help the polished videos while your actual reactions during streaming for those games would be entertaining while you're able to collect video for the polished video. Just an idea. I vote something horror or horror adjacent. Save the weird build ideas for Elden Ring though. Maybe revisit some old builds to see how viable they are in the DLC.

James Kane

That’s fine and as per usual not just here for Elden Ring but for you

Divine Chayde

It's truly terrible

Phillip Pap

It’s ok Phil I hate you too, and I like being called a baby. So in my mind your content, and thus the service you provide, is better than ever

Joelio

I hate Messmer’s orb it sucks for everything I’ve used it in
