BTS - Making of WTDS Background Art - 01 - The Hotel Lobby (aerial view)

Hey everyone! While I finish the next update of CH4 (Coming up next week X_X January has been criminal to me), I thought I coukd show you guys a step by step of how me and my amazing friend Cloudly.Art work on WTDS's background art.

As many fanartists, I first peruse xD the show to see if any existing background already fit any of the camera angles I need for my vision. For Chapter 00 I could use many of the backgrounds of the show, but for the spicy scenes in Angel's room for example, I obviously needed to create them from zero (based on Mothmanadjacent's beautful artwork of course - used with permission c:)

Anyways, the background I wanna talk to you about is this shot of the lobby: People have already started to trace it for their own fancomics, and although I don't mind people referencing my art (with permission and giving credit to me/my team OBVIOUSLY), it's really important to me to showcase the hard work my dear friend and myself make to accomplish a scene like this. We put long hours behind each one of the background art pieces we make and it pains me when people don't stop to think about that and just trace our hard work in half an hour without giving the proper credit, specially to my amazing collaborators c:

Sorry for the long text xD okay, so--

1. Long before starting Chapter 02, Cloudly made a layout of the lobby so we could communicate better.

She checked all these references from the show and then came up with this very complete layout, seen from the front door of the hotel. This background art was for Chapter 02.

2. Using this layout, I then explained the characters movement in the two scenes I was planning to use this background for. As well as the camera position, the reader's point of view and the area I needed to cover in the background art.

Since Cloudly is a reader of the comic as well, this method helps lots coz we can work together without risk of spoiling the story for her xD

3. Then Cloudly made a very simple 3D layout of the hotel area and placed the camera where needed.

4. Using this screenshot from the 3D model, she started roughly placing the furniture and areas I needed for the shot.

And here's the final layout-- very rough but impossible for me to come up with without her help ;A;

5. Time for me to start "dressing" the layout up!

Some artistic liberties were taken of course, specially with the Hazbin style of the fixtures and the decor-- coz it would be just impossible for me to keep up with all of them when making a comic with so many camera angles like the ones I use ;u;

The bar CAN'T be skipped tho, of course, so I spend an embarrasing amount of time trying to make justice to the piece on top of it. I rewatched the whole season like 3 times trying to find as many angles as possible-- you DON'T want to see my reference archives x_x

6. And after maybe a couple days, and Cloudly's blessing, the background is finally DONE!

Here are all the scenes where this background art has been used (so far)

For "Not Drunk" I added a bit of New Year decor c: and rearranged the furniture so Husk could lay on a sofa facing the bar.

This has got to be one of my favourite backgrounds we've made so far. Sometimes I think I use it too much in the comic but after making this post I realized I haven't really xD --Get ready to see it again soon in chapter FOUR then!
