Kurt, there is not mandatory tycoon part in Euro Truck Simulator 2. You can simply explore the Europe (now with some DLCs much bigger and Scandinavia is coming soon), drive the trucks, buy better one or some nice or better parts of it, but you can simply sell always the old one and not employ anyone. For me the tycoon part is for those, who would become bored too soon but like tycoon style.
