Blueprints for Bloodcrete

First some bookkeeping. I've added my thoughts in reaction to the previous poll to the old post. The results weren't quite what I expected, but hey, that's why you do polls!

That aside, the main attraction of this week's post is the full blueprints for our core three characters, as of the end of Bloodcrete. As always, thanks to Lamsey for putting so much work into these!

These are meant to be accurate representations of soulhome conditions as of the end of the book. There are some abstractions, of course, as I don't name every single material. I also show some design intentions, such as Nauda's Nine Worlds Feast having nine sections, even though she's still playing catch-up there.

As you can see Theo's soulhome is full. He could ascend right now, if he wanted an average ascension. You'll see some final soulcrafting decisions in the seventh book, which will be all about the Authority ascension, and hopefully satisfying after so long moving toward this point. ^-^

Next week I will have a post, but it will come a day later than usual. This is because I'm taking part in an upcoming Megasale of fantasy novels. If you've wanted an Amazon copy of any of my books for any reason, they'll be at their cheapest then! Look forward to continued weekly posts, as I have lots of stuff in the wings.

Yeah, Nauda needed redesigning more than the others. She didn't do as much detailed work in the seventh book because Theo and Fiyu were doing so much soulcrafting, but if you want her to get down to brass tacks of optimization, expect it in the eighth!

Sarah Lin

Nauda redesign was essential, I’ve felt that she was all over the place and just throwing whatever in any location in any floor

Khaleel Mansi

I think it makes perfect sense, as it is a defensive armament placed inane with his technique that is based on repulsion

There can be weather conditions that are mostly cosmetic, yes. If someone lives in a part of a world where there's constant rainfall, their soulhome would have similar rainfall. They would need to build a slightly different soulhome to accommodate this but it would be in the same minor category as many other subjective elements. Soulhomes don't experience random weather like real worlds do. When their conditions change substantially, that's always a meaningful event. Altering this is actually something that's a very far future element.

Sarah Lin

We’ve seen light & dark manifested in preference (and the difficulty ascending pushing down on Fiyu like horrible light she’s adverse to) - is it possible for other (inconsequential) weather conditions to manifest naturally in someone’s soul? (Eg light rain or gentle wind if that’s something that someone feels a great affinity with). Or does weather always have more “meaningful” impact whenever it manifests? I absolutely love sitting under cover and watching rainfall - the idea of being able to do that wherever you are, in your soul home watching the rain in your soul would be a dream to me!

Elliott

The environment of a person's soulhome is determined by a person's soul (and generally their home). That's why Nauda's has a Tatian-colored sky and Fiyu's is dark, for example. Depending on their personal characteristics, some soulcrafters may have elements of a soulhome that strongly orient its directions (for example stars). It's also possible they just have a strong feeling that one direction is north, depending on their beliefs. Regardless, this is an internal state that isn't affected by your current world.

Sarah Lin

Can you explain a bit about that "direction" even means for the purposes of soulhomes? Like, how do you know what "North" is inside your soul and does that reflect anything about the world you're on, or is it like just an internal thing?

Keid

Many subtle details in soulcrafting matter... but this one is mostly personal. Your gate's orientation to your blueprint matters, but its actual direction is arbitrary. Some individuals or cultures might have beliefs about the subject, for example related to a rising/setting sun, in which case the subjective aspect of soulcrafting might make that direction easier for them to use.

Sarah Lin

Is there any significance to placing your wall’s gate (or doorway/vestibule) facing any particular direction? Or is it just personal choice? (Theo has gone East-facing, Nauda SE, Fiyu South, from the looks of things)

Elliott

Also, the stone from the Chasm Island is in that corner too, if memory serves.

Jerek Kimble

to theo based on the room types thing armament chambers fall in techniques so that is where it would go(which corner is a bigger question) and Navim seemed to agree with how the ruler techniques were all more support focused

goi

Hmmm it never clicked that his clothes are in a corner chamber above one of his techniques. Hopefully that gets fixed before an ascension!

Travis Smith

Thanks I must have missed that. Looking forward to the completion of her transcendent monument. As for the legend, I was more thinking about the materials used in the structures themselves rather than the ones used inside chambers.

Nechochwen

We tried to label many of the materials, but if you have any further questions or want more in a legend, we could pursue that! Nauda's bondsfungi reinforce her body, so she's trying to make them grow only on her "leg" towers. I believe there was a sentence about this somewhere, but as I've been jumping between books, I could be confused.

Sarah Lin

Any chance we could get a legend of materials used in construction? Also, why doesn't Nauda's staff tower have any Bondsfungi on it?

Nechochwen

Not very hard until you start to get up to four or five tiers of shielding wall. It won't be a major soulcrafting issue again until a number of books down the road.

Sarah Lin

This is a nice idea, but wouldn't be easy to produce from my notes. That's the sort of thing that would be nice on a wiki... but it looks like the fan wiki has gone down due to its host. Unfortunate. TWC7 is going well! Expect a post just about that, unless the book is ready too early for me to squeeze it in.

Sarah Lin

Hmm how hard is it to extend a shielding wall after an ascension? It’s supposed to be a single material so it stays strong but you’d want to use the best material for your tier.

Jerek Kimble

Thank you! Looking forwards to seeing what the intermission holds... Personally I would find it very interesting to have a brief summary of each of the materials in Theo's soulhome, where he got it from, and what it does; might be a very easy win from your notes (or not - just thought I'd ask!). How are you getting on with the next book? (Again no pressure, just curious and thought I'd ask!)
