Starshaper, the newest book in The Weirkey Chronicles: Chapters 1-3

On this glorious day of April 1st, I'm proud to announce that in the future all chapters of The Weirkey Chronicles will be written by AI. Every book cover will now be purely AI, like you see above. Here are the three new chapters:

-

Chapter 1

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu were gathered around a small campfire in the middle of the forest. They had been traveling together for days, and tensions were starting to rise.

Theo, a tall and muscular man with a thick beard, was sharpening his sword with a small whetstone. Nauda, a petite woman with short, curly hair, was sitting cross-legged next to him, quietly meditating. Fiyu, a slender elf with pointed ears, was pacing back and forth, looking agitated.

"Can we please stop for the night?" Fiyu said, throwing his hands up in frustration. "I can't take it anymore. My feet are killing me, and I'm starving."

Theo looked up from his sword and raised an eyebrow. "We need to keep moving, Fiyu. We're getting close to the border, and we can't afford to be caught by the enemy."

Nauda opened her eyes and spoke softly. "Theo is right. We need to be careful. We're in hostile territory, and we can't let our guard down."

Fiyu groaned and kicked a nearby rock. "I know that, but can't we at least take a break for a few minutes? My stomach is growling."

Theo sighed and sheathed his sword. "Fine. We'll stop for a little while. But we need to keep our eyes and ears open."

They sat around the fire, roasting some deer meat and sharing some bread and cheese. Fiyu was quiet at first, still feeling grumpy, but eventually, he started to relax.

"So, Nauda," he said, chewing on a piece of bread. "What do you think we'll find on the other side of the border? Do you think we'll be able to find the artifact?"

Nauda shook her head. "I don't know. The rumors are conflicting. Some say that the artifact is just a myth, while others say that it's real and powerful. We'll have to see for ourselves."

Theo leaned forward. "Whatever it is, we can't let it fall into the wrong hands. We have to do whatever it takes to keep it safe."

Fiyu nodded. "Agreed. We can't let the enemy use it against us."

As they finished their meal, they packed up their gear and continued on their journey. The forest grew darker, and the air grew colder. But they kept moving, driven by the hope that they would soon find what they were looking for.

Chapter 2

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu were traveling through a dense forest, their path lit by the faint glow of Theo's wand. As they walked, Theo grumbled under his breath about the slow pace and the rough terrain.

"Why did we have to take this route?" he grumbled. "I told you we should have gone around the forest. This is ridiculous."

Nauda rolled her eyes. "We've been over this, Theo. The other route is too dangerous. This is the safest way to get to our destination."

Fiyu, who was walking a few paces behind the other two, piped up. "I don't mind it. The forest is nice. And look, there are turnips growing over there!" She ran over to a small patch of vegetables growing in a nearby clearing.

Theo snorted. "Turnips. Of course you would be interested in turnips, Fiyu. You and your love of all things dark and dreary."

Fiyu shrugged and dug up a few turnips, brushing the dirt off with her hands. "I don't see what's so wrong with liking the dark. It's peaceful. And turnips are delicious."

Nauda laughed. "I think Fiyu has a point, Theo. You're always so grumpy and serious. Maybe you should try enjoying life a little more."

Theo scowled. "I have more important things to worry about than enjoying life. Like keeping us all safe from harm."

As they continued on their journey, the forest grew darker and thicker. The trees seemed to close in around them, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional snap of a twig.

Fiyu shivered. "I don't like this. It's too dark. Can't we make a fire or something?"

Theo sighed. "We can't risk attracting attention. We'll have to keep moving until we find a safe spot to rest."

Nauda put a hand on Fiyu's shoulder. "Don't worry, Fiyu. We'll be fine. We just have to stick together and stay alert."

They trudged on through the forest, their nerves on edge. But despite their fears, they couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie. No matter what dangers lay ahead, they knew they could rely on each other to see them through.

Chapter 3

Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu sat in a circle, each holding a small pile of magical materials in their hands. They were preparing to engage in soulcrafting, a powerful form of magic that allowed them to create soulhomes and gain special abilities.

Theo was the first to begin, his gnarled fingers deftly arranging the magical rocks and crystals into a complex pattern. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, focusing his mind on the task at hand. Slowly, the rocks began to glow with a soft, ethereal light, and Theo's body began to shimmer with energy.

Nauda watched in awe as Theo's soulhome took shape before her eyes. It was a swirling vortex of light and shadow, with intricate patterns etched into its surface. She could feel the power emanating from it, a palpable force that made her skin tingle with excitement.

Fiyu was next, her delicate fingers working with a mix of magical plants and metals. Her soulhome took on a different form, a shimmering dome of energy that pulsed with a soft, green light. As she worked, the dome expanded, stretching out to encompass the entire circle. Nauda felt a surge of energy flow through her, strengthening her own soulhome and imbuing her with new abilities.

As the three soulcrafters worked, their magic began to intermingle, each feeding off the other's power. Nauda's soulhome took on a brilliant, fiery form, with swirling flames dancing around its edges. She felt a surge of energy course through her, making her feel stronger and more powerful than ever before.

Theo and Fiyu's soulhomes were no less impressive, each one a unique expression of their individual power. As they finished, they stood back and admired their handiwork, their faces aglow with satisfaction.

"Well done," Theo said, nodding his approval. "We've created something truly powerful here. With our new soulhomes, we'll be able to tackle even the most difficult of challenges."

Nauda and Fiyu grinned at each other, their eyes shining with excitement. They knew that they were now stronger and more capable than ever before, ready to take on whatever the world had in store for them.

I hope everyone had fun with this. ^-^ I swear I didn't edit the AI-generated text in any way; I didn't even throw out any prompts, though you can see how I gave the AI increasing amounts of information with each chapter prompt. I imagine you could get improved results with even more information, but I wanted to see what ChatGPT would confabulate.

I'm not sure if people are interested in the process itself? For the first chapter, I gave ChatGPT almost no information except character names and the series title. For the second, I gave it basic physical information and detailed information on character personalities, to amusing effect. Then for the third prompt I tried to describe soulcrafting and ChatGPT... understood that it was a magic system. It got the terminology right, at least until the future books section.

I didn't try particularly hard with the art. Trying to get all three main characters was a flat out failure, so I focused on Theo, but I just gave it a few physical details compared to the writing sections. So please enjoy Mangled Hand Theo, Emo Theo, and Rugged Model Theo.

Your real chapters will be coming tomorrow. ^-^

Unfortunately, this may also be dangerous for writers as the originality/copyright of their work may end up being questionable. I have been reading various writers being concerned about it. Here is a good summary: https://michellegarrett.com/2023/03/11/the-realities-of-using-chatgpt-to-write-for-you-what-to-consider-when-it-comes-to-legalities-reputation-search-and-originality/

In my prompt descriptions I stressed Fiyu's background and view, and it sort of got it at first, but then it just flipped around. XD

Sarah Lin

Yeah, that's one thing I haven't tested. The other authors I know are trying a different approach: feeding it a "script" of bare bones details and telling it to flesh things out. Unfortunately for me and other writers, this seems to work reasonably well.

Sarah Lin

I like how it decided Fiyu likes dark things, then she's scared of the dark

Andrew

>Fiyu shivered. "I don't like this. It's too dark. Can't we make a fire or something?" My favorite of the bunch. A gem.

Runcible Technician

You know with the larger context window in GPT 4 (32k Tokens with the bigger option) I am curious what it would deliver given a few chapters then the told to write the next chapter in the same style (with or without details about what the chapter should contain.) I might get chatgpt pro next weekend because I wanted to test how well it assists with coding a simple app. Maybe I will try it then.

Pete

turns out, the millions monkeys gets a lot closer when provided repeated training and scoring

Jerek Kimble

I'm really hoping drearyturnips show up in someone's soulhome now.

Jerek Kimble

Nice, that shows nicely where ai is at as well, never really understanding the characters or setting completely, but super close just a bit more generic fantasy.

Robin

> Theo scowled. "I have more important things to worry about than enjoying life. Like keeping us all safe from harm." Really nailed the spirit of Theo here.

Cicero

Huh, the AI synopsis just made me twig to the fact that the don't seem to be any gods or organized religions in the Nine Realms. Also, this AI writing is incredibly generic but it already seems to be passing My Immortal in quality, so who knows what the future holds? I feel like we are actually building the million monkeys with a million typewriters eventually writing Shakespeare thought experiment.

Nathan Rice

Hmm. I like the beard and turnip stuff honestly. A beard would kinda fit theo, and I like the joke about fiyu liking "dark" foods like roots and mushrooms

Josh Ewart

This was great, and the dark and dreary turnip empire shall last a thousand generations!!

Nimh

Now that I’ve read this, we need the team to get some turnips for their feasting room or something. And maybe Theo goes undercover with a fake beard?

Reborn

I'd like to order some dark and dreary turnips, please.

Slightly Morbid

Fiyu started off as a man in chapter 1…. Weird.
