New Project Announcement

Finally time to announce this. Not when I might have chosen on my own, since there's a lot going on, but this was the best time for Audible, so it's time for the big news I've been hinting!

Just over two years ago, I started a serialization under a new pen name, entitled Depthless Hunger (apologies, but that RR link is a stub). It performed... okay. Average rating, 6000+ followers, a modest number of patrons on an alt account.

My goal with this was another experiment in my ongoing quest to see whether or not there is meaningful overlap between the sorts of things I find interesting to write and the sorts of things that the progression fantasy audience wants to read.

Well, two years later this series is about to reach the first satisfying conclusion (the first five books/arcs form an overall saga). I negotiated a huge audiobook deal with Audible, but only under the condition that I relaunch the series as Sarah Lin - for obvious reasons, since they want to make as much profit as possible in return for giving me a big advance.

So on November 4, the audiobook version will be launching, alongside a new version of the ebook under this name, and the other books will be coming steadily throughout 2026. For most of you, this will be the first time you've heard of this, so there's potentially a lot more of my writing coming... if this series is of interest to you.

You see, I wrote this under a different "brand" for a reason, so let me try to outline some of the differences so you can decide whether or not to try the series:

The series is going to (re)launch on November 4, and Audible wants me to do the announcement early for the sake of preorders. The whole business with relaunching a book is a bit strange and the process may be uneven, but I am trusting that Audible knows what they're doing and this is the best strategy. Apologies if this is more uneven than normal.

Right now I have two links for preorders:

https://www.audible.com/pd/Depthless-Hunger-Audiobook/B0FX64WVSR

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FXVCN78K

Audible wants people to use those preorders, so please check them out if the description of the series sounds interesting to you. I also intend to put up an ebook version, but that isn't quite ready yet. November 4 is just over a week away, so all of this will be progressing quite rapidly by publishing standards.

Anyway, I hope this is a positive, not a negative. Some of you found the serialization on your own or know for one reason or another, so maybe people will sound off in the comments. I'm available if anyone has questions before they spend any money. In any case, I'm just trying to make my way in the industry and this is another part of my journey, hopefully not a dead end. Where exactly it all goes remains to be seen, but obviously it will include bringing TWC to completion.

Comments

I've been following this one for sometime. I'm surprised. But come to think of it, Omilaena and Jurey are very much ur kind of xters.

Bram Wel

Well, it's up to you. The DH system is pretty substantive in a different way but there will be more relationship stuff than you'd want.

Sarah Lin

I'll give it a look out of loyalty, but I wanna say that all the 'different' things about TWC are what I enjoy the most. Soulcrafting is so much more substantiative than 90% of power systems, and I really appreciated Theo's disinterest in relationships.

RainbowPhaze

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Really appreciate that review. ^-^

Sarah Lin

I picked it up and could not put it down, love the series! After finishing the ebook (review submitted!), I liked it so much that I am now already 350 chapters deep on royalroad. :-)

Chase128

I feel it's distinct from harem fiction, but you may not. I don't know what to tell you other than that I explicitly signposted this for people who might feel as you do. If you want to stop before any of that begins, you'd read the first two books, as the real relationship is established in the third.

Sarah Lin

I’m currently reading/listening to this. I really enjoy the story so far, but I really… am not interested in anything harem or harem adjacent. I’ll keep reading for now, but I may end up abandoning the story when the poly stuff starts coming in. I guess I’ll have to see when I get there. I really enjoy the thoughtful spin you always put on progression fantasy and litrpg, and I did like how you managed the harem/potential poly aspect in new game minus, so that good will keeps me going. And for the record I always thought your writing of relationships, including sexual and romantic ones, was very relatable. It’s one of the reasons I like your writing I think.

Jormungandragon

Glad you enjoyed it. Please leave reviews wherever possible! If you liked the wish fulfillment aspect, keep an eye on how I introduce future projects, as I try to always be clear about my goals going into something.

Sarah Lin

Tore through this book today, and now carrying on to royal road. This might be my favorite series of yours, I loved it. And I loved it because of that wish fulfillment, I appreciated it. Please keep writing more like this <3

Luke

Loved DH!

Jonathan Taylor

I'm sorry to hear you didn't really enjoy it, but not really surprised, hence the disclaimers on this post. Anyway, it doesn't hurt for you to leave your thoughts, but I also don't have much to say in response.

Sarah Lin

Just finished it and I didn't really like it as much as tWC or brightest shadow. I think that has more to do with me not liking the mainstream than anything you did wrong - it felt indistinguishable from what I'd usually encounter. Edit: Oh my, enter posts on patreon, I wasn't done. Edit2-the continuation: That said, I didn't dislike it, or really even not like it. I just liked it less. If anything, it served as control for my tastes, now I'm sure it's the overall structure that bothers me and not the quality of the writer(because you are great). I will also say that while it wasn't love at first sight with either tWC or tBS, love it was. So good chances I'll like it more once it gets longer. This isn't really criticism, or a review. I'm just ramblingly telling you that I'm not on the overlap...because datapoints good?

Lenny

Thanks, hope you enjoy!

Corey Paulson

Ah, that's an old link. I've gotten it updated and added the audiobook, so thanks for reporting!

Sarah Lin

Hi -- big fan. Just FYI, I think there may be a broken link in the author's note at the beginning of Chapter 1 in RoyalRoad. It links to the Amazon book but the link doesn't work. (At least on my device.)

Rinn Netherton

Thanks, hope you like it.

Sarah Lin

I loved the moment in Crimsoncrest where he was going to give Senka the lover petal as a joke. "After a moment's thought, he decided that didn't bother him. He'd leave the bubbly romance to Nauda and Fiyu, and none of the relationships he'd built meant any less for not being romantic."

Chris Johnson

I've enjoyed all the other stuff you've written, I'll probably enjoy this too! Giving it a shot on Kindle

Chris Johnson

The relaunch has some new editing, but it's secondary stuff, tweaking details or sentences about character motivations. The RR chapters will have to go down as new books go up, but you have several months before the next book is released, so depending on how many you stockpiled you might not miss out on any that way. Up to you.

Sarah Lin

Wow wait what, I've been reading depthless hunger since the start and had zero clue it was also you. Definitely interesting I've been reading other stuff and stockpiling chapters guess I should catch up or is the relaunch changing anything?

Jacob trent

Thanks for giving it a try, hope you enjoy!

Sarah Lin

I'm in. I've enjoyed everything you've written so far, so excited for more. Good luck on the release.

Eric Trombly

Wait what else?

Yshua

Thanks, hope you enjoy!

Sarah Lin

Good luck on the book launch and hope you find many new readers!

Slightly Morbid

Cool, good timing! I had some audible credits taunting me every time I got in the car.

Cliff

To be clear, I think that’s neat. Like Rachel Aaron and Rachel Bach.

Yshua

You’re kidding! I’m supporting you twice?!

Yshua

I went to the Royal Road page for this fiction, and the first page of that links to an ebook version on Amazon, which no longer exists? Sarah: Please let us know when the ebook will again be available.

JLG33

I'd like to think so, but there hasn't been any crossover so far. I'm interested in writing many different types of fiction, and I'd be happy to write some general fantasy, but I've had no luck with agents.

Sarah Lin

belatedly, I can't remember if I've said this here, but I'm not a prog fantasy person really (I've been trying some that spouse recommended -- but p sure they're not genre standards) and from my perspective, TWC very much has crossover ability with other subgenres. I've been recommending it to friends who've never heard of prog fantasy. So as far as markets go there's a bigger/more general one that will love these, I think. they just need to know about them.

Shweta Narayan

You're probably thinking of this, yes. It begins in medias res, and I remain sad that many people called this a "spoiler" and bounced off, but since the average reaction was more negative than positive, I rewrote.

Sarah Lin

I think I remember that. Did it originally start with a big spoiler for the first hundred pages or so? I bounced off that spoiler hard.

llenay

I have mixed feelings about that common phrase, because while I do think that the numbers can be part of the pleasure of the subgenre, I feel that some people aren't saying it as tongue-in-cheek as I thought it was intended. We'll have to see what shape the subgenre takes in future years. Sorry, I wrote my response without seeing your edit. Thank you for your kind words regarding Street Cultivation... but I don't know how much you'll feel that DH expands the genre. I took another shot at things, anyway.

Sarah Lin

There is some room in the genre for fantasies aside from "Main character is very strong", although I do almost despair at times seeing soooo many goodreads reviews along the line of "Numbers went up, 5 stars". There are of course the cozy series, perhaps best in Beware of Chicken. Unfortunately almost all of these series start to struggle in the second book when the initial inspiration has run out. Mati Ocha of Scotland has The Transcendent Green which is very much a focus on community building and living in harmony with nature. The big dog He Who Fights With Monsters is actually fundamentally concerned about the ethical use of power. There are some series that are more town growing than protagonist growing. In some cases these are merely "town/city/country very strong" instead of "protagonist very strong" but in some cases there is a sense of umm societal growth rather than power growth. I would argue that there is a related fundamental gulf between books with essentially only a protagonist and everyone else is just a 1-dimensional line drawing and books with multiple fleshed out characters. All this is just because in any mass market entertainment there will be more interest in the shallow end than the deep end -- just consider the vanishingly small number of superhero movies with any depth versus the dominance of shallow blockbusters. Anyhow, as a huge fan who believes Street Cultivation should be mandatory genre reading to show people the possibilities of how the genre can be expanded, I am very excited to see what this new series has to offer.

Mark Schaal

It's very difficult for me to answer this question accurately for you, because while I would not say it includes any horror elements, I would have said the same about TWC. There are more bodies in DH, I can say that. You might want to ask community members who have read both about more specific details.

Sarah Lin

I've got one big question-- does it dip into horror? I have a hard time with even borderline horror (I have a fucky stress/cortisol response for actual medical reasons, and as much as it saddens me I actually have to skip the intro to Soulhome on rereads. Bodies 😑)

Shweta Narayan

maybe she's also secretly the third person!

Shweta Narayan

Rapunzel: a power fantasy

Shweta Narayan

Also, your e-mail was right beneath one from Sarah Tran, a hair influencer. I thought I'd clicked on hers first, and my mind was blown that she was announcing a power-fantasy NSFW RR story to her audience of women who want longer, healthier hair.

Michael son of Jacob

You have so many aliases 😂. This is what, the fifth?

Michael son of Jacob

I can't say whether or not DH would be for you, as it's much closer to the sort of thing you've burned out on, but thanks for giving it a look. I don't have the right UK link, unfortunately, but if you look through the comments, I believe some people found it.

Sarah Lin

I burnt out on typical litRPG type stories years ago, they all started to blur together, which is why, along with Eight, The Weirkey Chronicles is what I consider to be some of the best of the cultivation/progression genre. More interesting characters, power systems and settings. If anything, I want TWC to be even slower, be more about exploring the Nine Worlds :D I'm not completely sold on Depthless Hunger but I do really enjoy your writing so I'll give it a try even if it's more "standard". (And as a poly person, extremely excited for a slow burn poly romance! I see so few well developed poly relationships in media.) Do you have pre-oder links that Audible wants you use for Amazon UK? :)

Bryan Gray

Subbed to both you AND your secret identity!

Kris Boxall

I expected some people would feel that way, hence why I tried to describe the project clearly.

Sarah Lin

Honestly I completely overdosed on litrpg wish fulfillment two years ago. Being a patron for this series has been really nice since it's really hard to overdose on two chapters a week. I'll probably give this one a pass, but good luck regardless.

rockets-don't-make good-toast

Yes, the removed chapters comprise the first book. You could theoretically sub to the other Patreon, but its tiers are more expensive and it would be a slightly older draft. After the first book is out, you would be able to jump to RR chapters and would have months to catch up before more got removed. The difficulty with merging Patreon accounts is that they have different tiers and focuses (and the brand differences might matter after all). However, the Cognosticon Patreon will suspend all payments when I don't have more chapters for DH. EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see your edited questions. If you are a current patron when a bonus chapter is posted, you get emailed a copy you can keep. Otherwise, it's temporary. Sorry about that, but NSFW is what moves the needle and this is apparently the best model. You could grab all the bonus chapters in one month, but you'd probably want to wait for a while later to get them all.

Sarah Lin

I don't listen to books on audible - but I'm so looking forward to reading these on Kindle!

Alison Stoneklifft

Congratulations on the launch! I will definitely be giving Depthless Hunger a try since I’ve enjoyed everything else by you. How will the Patreon work going forward? Will that series be merged into this Patreon? (ie will Sarah Lin patrons also be getting access to Depthless Hunger chapters?) And can you explain how the bonus/NSFW chapters work? Do readers only have access to those for as long as they’re subbed to the appropriate tier of the Patreon? Will they ever be available on RR or elsewhere? I would love to read those and read them at the appropriate time in the story rather than reading them all back to back after I’ve forgotten the context. I also don’t think I can afford the asking price for more than maybe a single month, so I would have to figure out what the right time is to get access to those. Without more information, the extra chapters situation is probably my biggest point of hesitation with diving into the series as I do not like to feel like I’m getting an incomplete story and I would consider those romantic moments to be key to the story, personally. Also, I checked on Royal Road and I see that only about 100 chapters are stubbed. Are those the ones that will comprise book 1? I’m planning on buying all the books like I do with TWC but I would like to catch up ASAP if I enjoy the series, so RR is probably still the fastest way to do that. What I’d like to know is, how many of the books will we have to read before we catch up on the stubbed chapters and can just keep going on RR? Alternatively, would it just be faster/easier to sub to the other Patreon for access to those (currently) missing chapters? Apologies for the barrage of questions. The announcement was a lot to take in as a longtime fan, haha. For what it’s worth, the series seems extremely up my alley and literally my only sticking point is the potential handling of the NSFW/bonus chapters as mentioned above. Congrats again!

The Freigh

I would actually like to do more stylistically, but I do like to shift my work a little between different projects.

Sarah Lin

I try to give regular support to authors I like, but there are very few that I leave myself permanently subscribed to on Patreon--in fact, only three, at the moment. And it turns out that two of them are the same person!? Ha. Did not see that coming. At least I know my literary tastes are consistent, in a sense. Pretty impressive that you were able to push out so much content for both series without letting either one really slip, Sarah. Also really glad that you did not give up on Depthless Hunger when it did not immediately take off. I do recommend Depthless Hunger to anyone that has not yet given it a try. It is an excellent progression fantasy series although of a different flavor than TWC.

Torphin

Hah, been enjoying the content you've posted on both of your accounts on here then as it turns out, never thought about it but it makes sense on so many levels! Feels a lot like the spiderman pointing meme with this reveal =)

Erik Andersson

Yeah, I was wondering that, too. Jonathan Davis is a very good narrator with a long career so I expect good things when listening to this one. I realize it might not be in my usual preference zone, but I pre-ordered it because Sarah Lin has been able to make me enjoy other books outside my usual... and it isn't too long to wait for. ;)

ZJJ

How long is the audiobook? it's not mentioned on the audible page.

Andrei

I haven't heard of Depthless Hunger before, but I'll give it a shot since I now know that I already like the author. Also, it makes sense to me that people wouldn't be able to tell you were the author of another story, since when I got caught up with TWC and ready your older trilogies, I was surprised how much your writing style changed to fit each genre.

Nicholas

Sneaky Sneaky Sarah! Definitely going to give this one a try since you're already established as an amazing author.

FallenRock

I definitely wouldn't call Theo asexual. He's just an old man very dedicated to his train set (i. e. soulcrafting).

Adamanus

Well, I don't know that it was that successful an effort at mainstream, but it's definitely more in that direction.

Sarah Lin

One of the main reasons I've always wanted to be a writer is the opportunity to write many different sorts of things!

Sarah Lin

Absolute legend Sarah Lin be like, 'you fools think I can't write mainstream?' And then just dunks all over the haters with her good writing. This is hilarious. Hilarious! Just casually, 'I've been writing an entire other book on the side'. Absolutely wild. I will definitely read it, cause I'm just as much a sucker for powerfantasy as I am for cool magic systems.

Inv7ctus

Pre-ordered on Audible (the link didn’t work for UK store but I could search and find it). I will probably wait and read the ebook first however, I tend to prefer audiobooks for re-reads rather than first read. Congratulations in advance on the upcoming relaunch; I had no idea this existed, looking forward to more good stuff from you! Do you have a particular favourite to write out of all your series, or is it very much different series you get to enjoy experimenting with different things?

Elliott

(and super keen to support/pre-order but FYI the kindle preorder link seems to just direct those of us outside the US to the audiobook

E W

I have a vague theory that progression fantasy is actually two broad genres sharing a lot of surface and structural similarities but actually doing very different things. On the one hand there are pro social community building stories where collective advancement/safety/goals are what all the systems and progression are in aid of, on the other there are much more common "number goes up" (typically straight male) individual power fantasies. I'm much more interested in the former (that is in part why I'm here!), & this sounds like exploring those questions even more explicitly so pretty excited to pick this up!

E W

Hot damn I'm subscribed to both.

support!

Pre-ordered

Cam

I'll grab the ebook. Thanks for letting us know.

Corey Paulson

The books will remain basically SFW and I don't see a need to take down the bonus chapters.

Sarah Lin

Hmm... it contains some of the "against society" themes seen in Street Cultivation, but with faster pacing and a protagonist who can make a substantial difference.

Sarah Lin

Well, like I said I was aiming to do something different with this one, so it depends on what you're looking for from my work.

Sarah Lin

I was not given one, but I'll try to get this figured out and hopefully Audible will have something for you by the launch date. Sorry about that.

Sarah Lin

Though I complain at times, I love writing and consider it a privilege to be able to do so as a career. ^-^

Sarah Lin

Ebook version should definitely be coming out on the same day! If you really mean hardcopy... yeah, there's no reason I couldn't jump through the hoops to get a paperback available.

Sarah Lin

Thanks for this comparison!

PatienceHoney

Damn, this is one of my favorite series as well. Congrats on the deal

Derek Walker

Huge respect for managing to turn out multiple long-running ongoing series! That's impressive.

Chris Durston

OMG I'm so excited. I can't listen to books unless I'm trapped in a car (which rarely happens) but imma preorder the ebooks the moment that I can. I am so excited. I've loved all your books so far and can't wait to see your fresh take.

Bryce Leo

I remember reading it a while back when you linked it -- I'll pick up the ebooks. Question: I seem to remember that there were alternate versions available on Cognosticon that had sex scenes in them? Are those going to keep being available, or are those disappearing now that you have to become respectable? I never pledged to Cognosticon to check them out but kept meaning to do so At Some Point (TM).

Pickle

Exciting! I'll be sure to pre-order it on audible

Brennan

It's finally here! I've been following this series for a long time and I highly recommend it. I've once made an analogy of The Weirkey Chronicles being John Wick and Depthless Hunger being Hard-Boiled. Not the best analogy—obviously, Theo isn't a John Wick—but there's a level of 'cleanliness' to the violence in TWC. When's the last time you visualized a bloody or mangled or incinerated corpse when reading a TWC fight? Depthless Hunger is the opposite. The violence is dirty, muddy, gritty, and more of a struggle, which makes the triumps that much more sweeter. TWC is about moving through towns, cities, and palaces to gain requisite resources. Depthless Hunger is about digging through monsters, towns, muck, cities, swamps, forests, and THEN palaces. Theo is a grumpy old man learning how to love again over time. Kai, DH's main character, is a young man who'll be treated like shit, but will stubbornly choose to be a better person every time from the start—while STILL having that wonderful ruthlessness of Theo's when needed. Kai is kind, but he's not stupid. He's mature, but he still has a lot to learn, and seeing that development is very rewarding too. Then, of course, there's the magic system. Or should I say *systems.* DH mixes a litany of common magic systems, and the possibilities build up with each book. There's an astonishing amount to explore even after just five books. In contrast, by Bondsfungi, it feels like we've figured out 60-70% of soulcrafting. Across Depthless Hunger's five books, already filled with a ton of magic system explorations, it feels like we're STILL just scratching the surface. I'd say soulcrafting still takes the cake as a holistic system, but DH's systems are a VERY respectable second. A good chunk of discussion around TWC centers on its stellar magic system. It's the same for DH. I REALLY hope this gives the series the attention it deserves. It really does need more. At the very least, I recommend reading book 1 in its entirety. It has a VERY rewarding and cathartic climax.

AnythingAtAll

540+ more chapters of your work are suddenly available to me? Hell yeah!

Keid

Wow! Excited to read this whenever an ebook version comes out. It seems like this is a bit more standard in the ProgFant/LitRPG elements, are there any themes/curiosities you think new readers/listeners should be excited for?

Aiz Cranel

This is great news! From The description this isn’t something I’d normally jump on but knowing you wrote it gives it a stamp of approval so I’ve preordered the audio book. Can’t wait to read it!

CommodoreCaptain

Hi Sarah, the top link opened in the app for me but didn't take me to the page, it might be because I'm from the UK and it's a US link, is there a UK/ international link for pre-orders?

Andrew Goudie

This is hilarious. I have enjoyed reading both your works under your own name, and also Depthless Hunger in different ways. I never would have guessed that they were written by the same person (in a good way). Perhaps I should have because the character relationships (not just romantic) were well written in a way which is unfortunately uncommon for the genre but is one of your strong suits. I think I was actually subscribed to both Patreons for a while even.

MediumGray

Preordered! Hope that helps a little with the unending economic machine and your place in it!

Reed R Gale

Congratulations :) Pre-ordered, can't wait for the ebook version! It's crazy to think that, all this time, you have been writing another series in parallel. How do you find time to sleep ? ;)

Ferlin Sutton Léo

I'm impressed that you managed a whole other series while keeping the quality of twc so good.

Yellowfrog

Is it only audible or can I find it in print?
