Looking Ahead

Hi guys, hope you're all having a wonderful start to the New Year. It's time to vote for what film gets a Complete Guide after Beau is Afraid. What I'm looking for is four nominations that I'll then put into a poll on Youtube. But I'm giving you the first nomination - Nosferatu, which I still haven't seen but will fit nicely with what we've done already. So I'm actually looking for three nominations from you guys.

Just like when we vote on what Patreon stuff to cover, please write your answer down below and upvote any other suggestions you like the sound of. Try to think big rather than obscure, what would generate the most interest/clicks. If it's a film that you've seen but no one you know has, that's probably not the best answer for right now. It's not at all limited to A24, it's not necessarily limited to contemporary films either. I'd love to do Apocalypse Now, Eyes Wide Shut, for example. I will get to them, but for now while the channel is small we have to think selectively and navigate by public interest. That being said, by running this through two voting processes, hopefully we come up with the answer most likely to draw that interest.

I'm scared/excited to hear what you come up with.

Comments

I would love to see an In depth analysis of Pi by Darren Aronofsky, or Under the skin by jonathan Glazer.

Rconnor85

I think if you’re considering The Shining you may have to combine it with Doctor Sleep or do them back to back.

Laura Stidham

Anything by Mike Flanagan. If it has to be a movie, I'd pick Doctor Sleep. There's the fact that it's the sequel to The Shining, of course, but also the addiction allegory, and the way the Flanagan navigates between the King and Kubrick narratives is pretty interesting. I also think his Netflix shows have been great. 2023's The Fall of the House of Usher especially, with each episode being a retelling of a Poe story, along with the overall Usher framing story

Lank

I’d love to see an apocalypse now breakdown. But one of my favorite movies is Hannibal (set in Florence) and I feel like it is always overshadowed by silence of the lambs

Devyani

Arrival pleaseeeeeeee

Aixa Gonzalez

Nosferatu, The Killing of a Sacred Dear, Parasite, Heretic

Aixa Gonzalez

How about the film that William Peter Blatty considers to be the true sequel to The Exorcist (1973), The Ninth Configuration (1980), which he also wrote and directed, the film is based on Blatty's 1978 novel The Ninth Configuration, which was itself a reworking of his 1966 novel Twinkle, Twinkle, "Killer" Kane! And Altered States (1980) by Ken Russell, and adapted by playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky from his 1978 novel of the same name. The novel and the film are based in part on John C. Lilly's sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks under the influence of psychoactive drugs like mescaline, ketamine, and LSD. The film features elements of both psychological horror and body horror. Both films are ripe full of overt religious imagery and allegory.

Randy Ouellette

Thank you for bringing up this movie I had not even heard of. Such a great compliment to the The VVitch, as we see things from her own point of view instead. Flying colors in all categories: Visual and Auditory Mastery; Thematic Depth; Minimalistic Storytelling; Raw Performances; & Uncompromising Vision, as it avoids conventional horror tropes, opting instead for a meditative, almost hypnotic approach that blurs the line between reality and delusion. I loved it!

Fourth Horseman

Haha I rewatch his YouTube video on 2049 like once a month cus I love that movie so much

Caroline

Todd Field's "Tar", David Fincher's "Zodiac", Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko", Bong Jong-Ho's "Parasite" , Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave." Actually, ANY Park Chan-wook movie would be epic! Also, Red Letter Media dropped their "Nosferatu" review! You need to go see it, ASAP!

Kelly S. Moyes

It wasn’t The Favourite’s fault that Hereditary got snubbed, but I feel like your frustration was very warranted and just a little misplaced. Still love that movie to death though!

Megan Lange

You know out of every joke I've made on the channel that's probably the only one I feel like was mean spirited and I'd probably take back!

Novum

Still not out for me, and no clue when it's gonna be😩

Valeriia Shvets

Yes all of the above, thanks😅arrival thoooo 👀

Valeriia Shvets

Pink Floyd The Wall

Benny Ford

hell yes

Jared Cress

I know you threw a little shade at The Favourite in the Hereditary video (warranted I think) but I would love to see your take on that. It’s a very rich movie and I feel like it kind of came and went with little commentary at least from what I remember. Also Nope!!! And I’d love to see you do The Northman eventually just to round out Egger’s universe like you have with Aster.

Megan Lange

As much as I'd like to throw in my vote for The Shining, I fear it's been analyzed to near death. That said, I wouldn't be mad about watching YOUR complete guide to it. I would love to see Nosferatu (duh), Eyes Wide Shut, Long Legs, When Evil Lurks, or Saint Maud.

El Killer

Heretic and Suspiria 2018!

sodacandy

A Dark Song!

Melissa P

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY PERFECT BLUE!!!

Sav

Twin peaks, A clockwork orange, funny games (either version tbh, but the American one is newer and probably more audience appealing)

Jeffiot

Love the idea of Se7en. What about Shogun though? So much historical context to consider. Also would be excited for Eyes Wide Shut.

EmilyG

Eraser head!

Doodle Pea

Personally I'd love you to do a deep dive into The Northman but I'd be happy with whatever you decide to do 👍

Barry Hurst

Paw Patrol movie. Especially where Ryder breaks the fourth wall and shares the secret to their near unlimited funding: merchandising

Nate Dickson

the creator also writes suspiria

sulkybaby

The terror tv series

sulkybaby

If you ever do a video game, I'd like you to analyze Portal 2. I think it may be one of the best games ever made, although I always add the caveat that you have to have played the first game or the impacts wouldn't feel like anything in the sequel.

Professor Hazard

I'm gonna pitch you a low and slow one - The Hunt for Red October. Totally not your vibe thus far, but I'd love to see what you could do with it.

Professor Hazard

Thirding Twin Peaks, even just scrubbing over like you did with True Detective

Professor Hazard

Mulholland Drive would be amazing! There is only 1 solid video out there for it I rewatch but you would smash it. Annihilation or Mad God would be weekly rewatches for me too

Jessica Russo

Lake Mungo or anything David Lynch

Nathan

the godfather would be really cool

Ashlynn Jatzlau

People struggled to figure out Nope when it came out. Were most questions answered eventually?

Jared

Nymphomaniac would be funny…just a black censor box on youtube for the entire deep dive.

Jared

Nosferatu would be great! True Detective also. Keep up the good work, I loved the VVitch video <3

Merel Vanquaille

I know you’ve mentioned it before but a True Detective guide would be awesome even if it takes a couple of years to get too. Thanks NOVUM

Alton

I believe you can donate via the "Thanks" button on Youtube for each video. There may be other avenues, but I know that's definitely one.

Aniafaery

Lol, same! I got home and told my friend who is just as into the Novum deep dives as I am that I can't wait to see the complete guide for Nosferatu.

Aniafaery

Se7en so much detail and an in depth look into the 7 deadly sins and John Doe's back story if you can get access to the graphic novel.

Amy Miller

I can never get enough Alien

Mary Delaney

Oh man this one would be my top pick

Mary Delaney

The Shining is a perineal favorite. The Thing could be fun. Change of pace, a ghibli deep dive could be really cool. I have zero idea what is going on with the Boy and the Heron.

John C.

Seconding the Shining

Mary Delaney

I would LOVE that, I wonder if it would get clicks?

Mary Delaney

Blade Runner 2049?

Mary Delaney

Howl's moving castle 🥺 would be increcible

Mary Delaney

Nosferatu would of course be great. How about The Godfather? I don't have any particular history with the films, but they have massive broad appeal and also a strong historical context you could do your thing with - the history of the mafia, of Italians in America, contrasting the film(s) with the book, etc.

Becquerel

Hagazussa

Gina Wesley

Honestly I'm just happy with whatever film you make a video about, I'm just happy to be here lol

When2 game

Maybe you can just listen to the audio description, actually, nevermind that might be worse LOL

When2 game

He actually has a lighthouse video already :D

When2 game

THIS!!!!!

Miranda Baumann

That one is definitely murder porn. Lots of censor boxes. But definitely LVT’s best (in my opinion).

Miranda Baumann

the Wailing is a great one :) or the Lighthouse from Eggers too

Dana Kobitzky

Jacob’s Ladder (1990) or Mulholland Drive (2001)

Alexander Sahm

Poor Things. Beyond the Black Rainbow.

Ty Rhoze

Red Rooms. Seriously.

Stitches

Let the right one in (the original Swedish movie)

Jan Zetterström

The Ring movies in totality would be wonderfully done. Your ability to tie in history of a culture with mythos would be phenomenal. Nosferatu would be awesome, as well.

Jarrett Foust

Depending on your interest in Japanese culture and history, any of the big Hayao Miyazaki Ghibli movies are guaranteed to get clicks - plus there’s a ton of lore, culture, and history stuff in there to dig into (especially with a film like Spirited Away). I would personally love a deep dive into The Boy and the Heron, but I recognize that might not have the same click potential as Spirited Away, Howl’s, or Totoro.

Liz

I also think EWS might get some more wide interest due to the recent release of a new Nicole Kidman sexual thriller (Babygirl) although maybe that’s just wishful thinking because EWS is one of my favourite films ever.

Liz

Heretic / seconding Yorgos Lanthimos's The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Wern Hao See

Ahahaha, this would be literally impossible. Nonononono spiders, sorry. I think I got like a third of the way through the film and turned it off. Which killed me to do, I love Villeneuve - but I prefer being able to sleep. Arrival, Prisoners, Blade Runner, Dune, any of them, but no Enemy sorry!

Novum

Enemy 2013!

Adam Cummings

A Dark Song, the Exorcist, or a Field in England?

etave

perfect blue!!

Carson Kirkley

A Dark Song!

Shannon Provost

Santa Sangre

Tempest

I'll always beg and grovel for your take on Asteroid City!

Marty

I would love to see some Kubrick analysis, the shining, 2001 A Space Odyssey or Barry Lyndon would be amazing.

Jared Cress

Nosferatu or alternatively, A Dark Song (please tell me you have seen it!)

Jason Nieuwoudt

YES

kaliban zehe

i really would love to see you break down some yorgos lanthimos films. the lobster, killing of a sacred deer, banshees of inishirin. i’ve been studying his films for years and your analyses are fantastic so the combo wombo would make me nerd out so hard

kaliban zehe

Exorcist 3 is a major cult classic in horror circles, so much so that I went into it for the first time a year or two ago with unreasonably high expectations knowing it was so many people's favorite exorcist movie and was very underwhelmed lol

Shannon

Rosemary's Baby seems like a no brainer! Though there may be an overload of existing analysis there

Shannon

Lars Von Trier's The House That Jack Built is absolutely loaded with religious allegory and I feel like anyone who sat through it would also sit through 5 hours of analysis of it!

Shannon

An M. Night Shyamalan would always be of interest, and a comparison of The VVillage and The VVitch or a look at folk horror in general would be of great personal interest to me—it's also in line with what was started in the Midsommar/Wicker Man video.

Shannon

Darren Aronofsky's mother! and Alex Garland's Men as divisive, confusing choices with mass appeal (I'd be obsessed with either one of these).

Shannon

Also, Interstellar could be great!

Scarlett

Us or Get Out! Those are both relatively big, and I think Us is a masterpiece.

Scarlett

Eyes wide shut!

Dani Young

A Clockwork Orange, The Shining or The Exorcist would be my top 3.

Scott Sinner

this is a good idea. It might require a comprehension of the Korean language though. I saw it with a Korean speaking friend who told me that there was some subtext and deeper meaning lost in the English subtitles.

Emerson Breneman

Something from Jordan Peele! Nope or Get Out would be my pick

Stasha BoBasha

Huh, when does it become available where you live? I watched it in December

Kim Schmider

I like your taste in films, so I'll trust your judgement

Kim Schmider

I'd have to agree that seeing Kubrick overanalyzed would be awesome... But I'd also adore to see more weird surreal films like Killing of a Sacred Deer, or any Yorgos Lanthimos movie.

Adonijah Haigh

Eyes wide shut would be so cool but I know nosforatu would be best once it’s available

Victoria Sazonov- Smith

Yes!!! To all of these!

Tara Daktyl

Poor Things

Tales Ribeiro

Parasite

Tales Ribeiro

I think the obvious answer was Nosferatu even before you added that you want it to be something current/relevant. With that, it's the only answer.

Shamus Walker

Oooh and that could open to the world of Korean horror - Parasite, Train to Busan, A Tale of Two Sisters

Lizzie Fishwick

The Thing

Phoenix

The Holy Mountain

Phoenix

Or anything by Mike Flanagan (I know they’re series but Midnight Mass has a lot going on and The Fall of The House of Usher has so many Poe eggs!)

Lizzie Fishwick

i would like to see some Stanley Kubrick movie, like space odyssey, or the shining, or the the clockwork orange

Tales Ribeiro

Ok, so if you are already doing Nosferatu (2024), then I nominate Eyes Wide Shut (1999). The only Youtube creator that has done deep dives, across many videos, is Rob Ager. But he has missed the opportunity to tackle the occult properly. Hereditary & Rosemary’s Baby (do that eventually, please) had location based cults. But with EWS you can go into the very popular Bavarian Illuminati. Theosophy, Vril Society, OTO, Crowley. Kenneth Anger. Jack Parsons. Laurel Canyon. You can integrate John Dee, and Queen Elizabeth I. How during her reign astrology was widespread recognized and used as a science. Milton & Dante. Alchemy. And even The Templars. The Gnostics. Saturnalia. Just peppering broad ideas. I would love a complete guide to secret societies across time. EWS is the perfect movie. And it’s a Kubrick film. Cherry on top: Booyah!

Fourth Horseman

The Shining

Lizzie Fishwick

Also thinking big, it could also be interesting to do your style of analysis with Squid Game, given the hype around it and S2, with S3 on the way, it could be something good to drive interest etiher before or after S3's release.

David Krakauer

Given the Witch complete guide, I feel as though Nosferatu is an absolute must, definitely my vote. I think considering the discussion about Robert Eggers wanting to do more on reflection with the Witch, seeing the transformation in Nosferatu for comparison as well as the new thematic analysis would be very interesting.

David Krakauer

I know it's a show and not a movie, but I'd love to see you cover The Haunting of Hill House. For movies, I think The Shining is good, I really like Oculus, and it would be cool to see your take on more mainstream popular ghosty movies like The Conjuring, Insidious, and Sinister. Talk To Me and Alien Romulus also did well for their release block and I thought they were both pretty good. And after watching Nosferatu I was hoping you'd do something on it!

Hannah Olech

I mean- HERETIC! The Babadook, and Black Phone.

Robin hagen

I concur!

Tales Ribeiro

I’d love to see more on the Alien franchise!

Lizzie Fishwick

Nosferatu, The Shining, The Exorcist I think would all be super interesting picks that would get a lot of clicks

GojiraCrunch

I walked out of Nosferatu very pleased and thought “Wow, I can’t wait for Novum’s Complete Guide on this!”

petitquasson

Apocalypse Now or Heretic

Nick

Long legs?

When2 game

Annihilation

Red

The Shining is my all time favorite, I’ve seen the movie a hundred times and read the book repeatedly. I have my own theories and I’m so curious if you come to similar conclusions.

Kaylynn Tillett

Suspiria 2018 and Nosferatu! I think you’re the only YouTuber who can tackle the background behind the 2018 rendition

Marnarnar

Ooh yeah I'd like to see this! Especially if Exorcist 3 could be covered briefly too. Underrated movie.

Siobhan Morris

Also, you’ve got to do The Substance. Demi Moore just won a golden globe for her performance in it. It’ll get you clicks for sure. Not sure if there’s any deep lore about it, but an analysis in the style of your Alien video would be bomb.

Andrei Krishkevich

Heretic, heretic, heretic

Valeriia Shvets

Nosferatu would be ace. Also, idk if there's a lot to analyse but 'Heretic' got me thinking a fair bit. Again, not sure if there's a lot to analyse but '28 days later'. At this point, however, I will watch whatever you analyse and watch your videos happily.

DCi_Nacht

I'd love to see you tackle Twin Peaks but I realise it might be a bit of a stretch, that's a lot of run time.

Siobhan Morris

Go go go see Nosferatu if you can still catch in Dolby Cinema. I’ve seen it multiple formats, and it does enhance the movie a lot.

Andrei Krishkevich

Heretic, just saw this last week and haven't stopped thinking about it. There is so much to digest.

Alison

I know this would be another one very focused on Christianity but I think The Exorcist (73) could be an interesting choice, considering the history of exorcisms and demonology in the real world and how it’s put into practice in the film. And of course all the weirdness surrounding that movie at the time adding to that.

Liam Frasier

I’d love The Wicker Man but it’s not exactly a popping IP right now, maybe there’s some renewed interest on it of late. Suspiria has a lot going for it (both versions) and obviously please go see Nosferatu immediately, I saw it last night and it’s absolutely fantastic

Liam McLaughlin

The Northman

DVA Maker Studios

Nosferatu! Please, this would be amazing! Also, do you have avenues where we can donate to your channel on a one-off basis as well as patreon? Your content is the best and I was gonna send a donation if possible.

Biggersteinkins

Under The Skin but also Eyes Wide Shut!

Laura Palmer

I'd love to see your take on The Northman.

Astrea Ward

Great suggestion and we've already done some groundwork!

Novum

Suspiria 2018!!! So much to decipher there

Faith Sears

Use this button to vote for Nosferatu, it will almost certainly be included in the YT poll either way, but I'd still like to gauge interest.
