I think Jax, as a character, is an interesting opportunity in the story. Breaking a glow stick to see it glow is an overdone trope. Natural growth and forgiveness can make for a really beautiful story. If his goal and motivation is to sharpen himself, then maybe in his journeys he will look around and notice the world full of monsters and missions that are worthy of his efforts and would net good to the world as a whole. All of them fighting through the entire story could be a missed opportunity for all of their potential and screen time. All the while, the world is still full of monsters.
