As a mortician he is used to getting the body ready, dressing it up, putting on some makeup, and, of course, connecting with the dead using unknown magic! Not everyone has this kind of connection, but really, after looking closely (or better, hearing) it does look like he can hear their stories and feelings! When picking his route you'll get to know abt where those bodies came from and why all of them are connected bizarrely.
