Yes, it's ritual magick and it goes very, very deep, with origins going back to ancient times. Later in the movie the main character's ghost wakes up on a mat in a high school gym after having slept on it overnight. Kendrick was found dead in a mat in his high school gym and had been there overnight. I wrote five pages on his death with all the numerical ties that totally proves it, but that snippet above is the gist of it.
