Many things I would go ahead and do the sniff test. The expiration date is intended to happen before food should be actually going bad. But I agree with your mom that I would be very careful with meats/fish/poultry, and also with foods locally made at the supermarket. I think their dates are a little less likely to have slide time.

The #3 rule, I believe ky would use. Touch, smell, then taste. If all 3 passes, eat on girl... 😆 I was raised country, and that's how your immune system gets strength 💪

Expiration dates are basically suggestions. It's not like food goes bad instantly the next day. So I think that you would.
