lol the tits n clips joke is exactly the type of mem/joke you rant about in this video the added irony of it made me enjoy the phrase

Leon Karssen

These pages exist to provide validation to people who "ride skateboards" because they can understand the minor nuances of the memes.

spicy peter

I've always thought skate meme pages were lame as hell. All of them have the most repetitive jokes on planet earth. They take it so fucking seriously too. That 40 minute Grind Queen interview I think you were referring to is freak behavior.

i dont typically find these meme pages funny but have never really thought about what ramifications they could have on skating as a whole. i think they definitely do negatively affect younger skaters and possibly non skater girls who may already think skaters are hot or whatever, and at very impressionable ages participating in toxic relationships or practices can really make to shape a bad future for you if that's all you learn and condone and there are people on the internet glorifying it treating it like its the norm, although not everyone who skates is a kid the norm is to now direct posts, ads, media in general to youth so im sure they see it more then the typical grown person. like you said in the video it incentivizes terrible behavior and does make it seem like girls only skate to fuck guys, I think maybe if it wasnt these pages sole joke or brand it may not matter as much but for every big page like laterloser, tinyhatskatelife etc, there are 50 replicating their same practices and memes. all and all i cant say whether it would or would not affect skating to see these pages go because in any media/social platforms in general it seems like toxicity or cheating or sleeping around is always on the trendier or edgier spectrum of being cool. for example all the memes in 2020-2021 on Future(rapper) treating women badly or having multiple partners were some of the most popular on twitter. i think no matter what the bad boy/player persona will always be glorified by the majority cause it almost always has throughout history. but that said it doesn't necessarily mean we as skaters have to just accept the behavior just cause its a norm elsewhere.

Joa please respond to this

Sim Shepp

totally agree, but kinda feel like this is definitely the type of content to post on youtube when u got a platform boss. i understand the fear of conflict and response but it’s really important to be a dissenting voice when it really matters (especially when you’ve got marginalized groups dming you about something!! that kinda feels like asking someone with a platform to say something to impressionable people who respect what you have to say ! [see above comments]).

I don’t find those memes funny either and I understand your point that these memes can encourage shitty behavior from skaters - however, I did notice that you commented on a tiktok of a girl talking about how repulsed she was from Licorice Pizza. She talked about how it normalized grooming and inappropriate age gaps in relationships. Your comment was something along the lines of “you shouldn’t watch movies then”. Where is the line drawn for you? The girl on tik tok is making the same argument you’re making against this meme page. I understand that movies have artistic value and should challenge viewers, but it could also be said that meme pages don’t have to depict your ideal world either. Why is there such a distinction between what a movie can depict and what a meme page can depict? Regardless, I think this is an interesting topic to make a video about and I am glad you’re talking about it. The worst memes come across my explore page and I have never heard anyone challenge them before.

jakob longcob

Respect for you having the courage to share your experiences homie. Things have definitely gotten better for the skate community over the years, but alcohol abuse is still very normalized within it. I’m glad we have people like Joa, older pros, and even Dale Decker (for shits and giggles), to spread awareness. I agree on it being irresponsible to promote that shit. Skateboarding is a super influential thing and has such a powerful identity, you don’t want things like that to be associated with it. Like haven’t we grown passed that, y’know?

Dylan Dietz

I never really looked into these meme pages in much depth and i assumed all the stuff about girls liking grungy skate guys with dirty hands was sarcastic posts by male skaters, as in ‘we dont care about what girls think we just want to skate’. So weird that its actually girls fetishising skaters, how tf is that a real thing 😂

Patrick Smith

Hello Joa, I really appreciate you being serious about negative aspects of alcohol in skateboarding and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. The overwhelming presence of alcohol / substance abuse in skateboarding has changed my life forever. I’m currently 24 years old like yourself, although, I have lost two of my best friends to this horrible aspect of skateboarding that people like to promote. I lost my childhood best friend who was the one that got me into skating to drugs when we were 18 years old. And I recently lost my best friend who got me back into skating after a few years off the board to a relapse where he drove drunk and died. Now I skate for both of them and when i’m feeling up to it I do some crazy shit that’s definitely out of my skill zone and comfort zone for them since they were both much better than me. Thanks again for promoting healthy behavior and speaking out about the promotion of alcohol in skateboarding as I know first hand it has deadly consequences. The skateboarding scene and the individual skateboarders themselves should not and do not need to promote substance abuse it’s insanely irresponsible.

laterloser is the pinnacle of "guys i skate... see i know all the skating buzzwords... i must skate..." probably at this point just uses the platform to sell the garbage merch

brad

Beta male hawks podcast maybe? Idk though I’m not googling it

Garrick Slings

So funny to think that when my mom was 29 (the same age as laterl0ser according to the Tinder SS) she was a grown women raising two kids. Can’t imagine someone that age running a thirst trap page for skaters

Garrick Slings

i stopped following meme pages in general cuz i couldn't handle my instagram feed being filled with "politics" bait, advertisements for other meme pages and scams, and shitty merch that admin thinks will sell.

nolan

lol if Collin provost drank more water he might not look like a fried 47 year old, he's just 31! drink more water kids

Kevvo

Look at what Baker 3 did to an entire generation before Instagram. If memes/meme page consumption is the new norm of where we get our "gay bird moments" (ugh) then I think we as skaters absolutely should be paying attention to how stuff like this can possibly perpetuate bad ideas and ways of being.

Come to the east coast this lame shit doesnt exist here.

Bagmanjo

The main issue, in my opinion is reception. Meme page admins are fallible humans with their own insecurities and conflicts like the rest of us, and we still don't know what memes totally mean--shitpost or sincere--nor what the longterm impact will be. There's something irresponsible there that is kind of baked into meme's anonymous appeal: they can be taken in so many different directions. Not to defend her or anything--the points you make are good ones--but seeing how these memes manifest future bad behavior, rather than condemning them for commenting on things that have already happened, might be a better angle. Instead of blaming her, or the meme, shift the focus on who shares those memes and if and how that reinforces bad behavior. It's hard to say. But otherwise, righteous rant, great content.

Theodore Barrow

You're right. Super weak. She's found a morally questionable niche and is shamelessly exploiting it so it also comes across as very disingenuous.

I think it was the meme page grindqueentruckco was on a podcast with another meme page

Alex Prinzbach

What’s the 40min podcast made about joa?

Ryan

The posts on that meme page and other pages like it have always made me feel super uncomfortable, it seems to be mainly followed by young, super horny, teenage boys who are going to grow up thinking that this is normal and okay and that all women will be alright with this kind of behaviour and it also seems to be followed by a lot of girls who think that this kind of humour is empowering. If someone doesn’t find it funny or says that this humour is damaging or even dangerous then you’re seen as prudish or boring. I think it has a similar effect as something like porn where young people will watch it and believe that this is how normal sex is and then just go and meet up with a girl and start throwing her around and stuff. I do agree with everything you said in this video and I think it’s really worrying that this kind of humour is normalised. Rape culture is a problem in skateboarding and I’m not saying these meme pages are causing that but they’re not helping it by any means. There are a bunch of great women with pages that address issues to do with the darker side of skateboarding that they’ve faced and still post skateboard related jokes but just not hyper-sexual ones all the time.

chaosisme

I always viewed the “I use my board to sit down and drink beer” meme as making fun of the type of skater who would rather drink beer at the park then actually skate and thought it was pretty funny, but if that meme isn’t actually ironic then that’s pretty lame ngl

Jawn Shanahan

That t-shirt was disgusting, if you buy that shit, even ironically, you need be assessing why that money didn't go on therapy or to someone that needed it more.

Tony Straciatella

Man i’ve followed that account for a while but you really hit the nail on the head with this one... it’s pretty easy to ignore the implications of this type of content, but now I rethink it and it is pretty heinous. I’m 21 now and the last thing I wanna be is the type of dude this account fetishises.

Lurpiv_aust

I never liked LaterL0ser page as well. I couldnt figure out why for a while till i realize the shit being made fun of is toxic stuff being done irl. Skaters i used to be friends with being abusive/ not treating women with respect and to find out that a meme page run by a woman is reinforcing these negative stereotypes give a sour taste. Its especially bad for the younger male skaters, theyre going to see these memes and think that treating women like shit is ok.
