Skateboarding Youtubers

Ok so here is sort of a draft for a youtube video I will be releasing. Curious to hear what you guys have to say about the video. So

Skateboarding Youtubers

Comments

Most gamer YouTubers are less cringe than most skate YouTubers. I would also say most skateboarders probably are nerds, but maybe they aren't dweebs. Like this guy is handsome, but he's also insecure and a pussy. You could be ugly and soft and and nerd and still not be a dweeby-ass pussy, you know? Most actual rippers I meet look pretty nerdy, but their actions are cool.

Chrissy

And I think a channel that does some good shit is shredz shop Also just like nerdy skate content and the dudes pretty funny

Fim

I think for me the period where i watched john hill and some george poulos was like a transition from braille content to core skate content But that wouldn’t explain their plumeting view counts

Fim

I like the point about the specific youtube content being the issue rather than the medium itself. Gonz has a pretty sick youtube channel.

Peter Bunton

The nine club to me is a bunch of (older) dudes that made it in skateboarding now making it in youtubing. George P is making it in youtubing and using skateboarding to do it. To me George P is a Youtuber that skates.

nick wall

“We’re job buddies” lol

Matty B

I would love to hear your thoughts on Rad Rat's channel, considering you've mentioned that you like his videos. Why does his channel get a pass when guys like George don't?

Crash

G*orge P's latest vid since this coming out is "Skate Gear Reset" (Switching up my drip!)

tristen schern

It's wild that a person that makes a living pointing a vlog camera at themselves tries to convince people that they don't care about what people say or think about them.

JP

Facts, majority of the skate YouTubers water down the skating in order to appeal to a wider audience which of course isn’t a bad thing. But for dudes that have been around skating for so long it’s very unappealing. For example Ben degros is sick af, doesn’t do shit to make the video easier to follow for those who don’t understand skating, which I would much rather watch then someone who would rather cater to people that don’t skate in order to get more views and money. Keep killin the vids Joa

ooodoo

furry shot stayed on unfortunately long. my entire architecture studio saw as i had this play in the background while i did my work..

Emmett Maguire

It seems as though George is comparing core skating to YouTube skating which seem un-comparable. “Core” skate culture is the world and YouTube skate culture is a tiny little island on that world. The divide between the two is where people on planet core think that the YouTube island is wack. And the YouTubers can’t get away from the fact that they have taken from a culture that is cool.

Ryan Kewley

John Hill is gonna retire after seeing this one

Cole

You need to reference NinjaLifestyle somewhere, he's the OG youtube skater. Andy Cock and the scientologist can't match up with the vegas madman..

Sam

Yeah. You can respect John Hill for putting himself out there and putting in work to do his channel, but that doesn't mean you have to like it and even promote it.

Gabriel Womark

Always felt the same about John Hill, his videos felt painfully phony

Jonathan iannuzzi

you can use gifs on here

Cooper

nft

Ashton Ormsby

Facts don’t care about your skateboarding

Bain Parenteau

When did Milhouse from The Simpsons become a real life boy on a skateboard (and scooter)!??

Benjamin White

It seems like skateboarding YouTubers is just a good way to introduce kids to skating , then as they see the YouTubers getting made fun of and them just being cringe, some of the kids decide yeah that’s kooky and move to more core stuff

Robert Deckard

George nodding to the camera like he was in the room getting props from his homies made me feel sad and funny inside. You're just like the new Reynolds king, I also couldn't agree more.

Mikey

George Poulos is the personification of film grain b roll

Jawn Shanahan

Not all negativity is bad. George, try not taking yourself too seriously. Thats why youtube skater suck, because they take themselfs too seriously. Toxic possitivity only makes for people acting like they are flawless. That‘s not how the real world works.

Straizor

There has been this huge shift in the last 5 years or so where content creators in all sphere's went from 'this tanked, ok let's look at another way of doing better' to 'how dare you criticise all my hard work you unwashed peasant'. Not just YouTube either, the Game of Thrones ending had the actors pick up torches and pitchforks and come for people who dared criticised the half assed end series. Like I get it, you worked hard on it, but you're not going to entertain everyone, not everyone is going to like you, and if you can't handle that then maybe a 15 min video with a clickbait title pissing about it isn't the best way to move on.

Ash

How the fuck is your thing moving

Garrick Slings

i find it quite funny that mr poolous thinks he has "made it in skating" i feel like there is a lot more that factors into that rather than just having a succesful youtube channel and all of the points he made in the video. i would argue that even some of my favorite skaters have not fully "made it in skateboarding"

humanbeing2002

I would like YouTube skaters as much as core skaters if their content wasn’t cringey and unwatchable. Simple as that

Garrick Slings

Seems like george has got a serious case of toxic positivity, and at the root of toxic positivity is the idea that we must ignore all things negative in spite of the fact that those negative things might be real. Positivity is sort of wasted and possibly even harmful if it doesn't come from a genuine place. As you said in your video, George sees himself in this really positive light to sort of escape and ignore the reality that he wasn’t able to find a place in core skateboarding, and I think you do a good job of showing that perhaps it is this fake positivity, that he uses to cope with his insecurity, that also motivates him to try to get the rest of the skateboarding community to also think with this toxically positive mindset. I think that perhaps one of the most toxic things about toxic positivity is the kind of conformity it tries to enforce. It kinda seems like the point that George is trying to make is that we all need to be positive all the time even when we don’t truly feel it because we might hurt someone else when were honest, and I think this video and others in which you give people constructive criticism provide a good counterargument to that point. You can criticize someone with out hating them or trying to make them quit what they're doing entirely. That being said it does feel like there is a fine line between criticism and hate and I think unfortunately the environment of the internet creates a large amount of room and safety for people to just straight up hate without having a good reason.

Gabriel Womark

george is such a cooky guy

Edgar Quintana

I would love to hear you further go into the concept of making skateboarding YouTube more distinct in format and customs from other genres of YouTube. That was my favorite part

Benjamin Saunders

But fr I’m hyped you’re actually releasing this on YouTube, you make some good points that other yt skaters/ general skateboarding audience should hear

sexyprostateexam

my favourite part is when you said scrotisinal scrandom

sexyprostateexam

At least George exhibited some self awareness tho, even if he didn’t mean to

garth

dangerous to think that the 9 club is core and i think that youtubers have created this divide themselves. in naur other sport/hobby/bullshit is there such a debate- the line is drawn and that's fine. boundaries do exist. i've had 3 ciders and am going to go watch bottom feeder for the 800th time.

garth

You accidentally stumbled on a weird thing in YouTuber culture where you have to tolerate and be all smiles in every video or bigger youtubers won't collaborate with you. I'm not saying George is like this, but a lot of the fake positivity types will be the first to talk mad shit on everything in private. It's so weird lmao

Cooper

Youtubers seem like they don’t have the kind of infrastructure that a lot of the professionals you are making comparisons to have. Most successful podcasters for instance work for a podcast network like the Ringer where they have editors to guide them. Guys like Zach Lowe or Bill Simmons also frequently have a previous or continuing career as a writer where they are taught to refine their voice and craft. Skating has people that could teach some of these skills but formal analysis has been counter to the culture of skating.

JP

my first thoughts is that this is a good YouTube video to make. I think George is dipping into the delusional side of this happy go lucky fallacy that would just realistically destroy the core fabric of skateboarding, as you were saying. This is your career, (for the time being) and you should be vigilant of how your “coworkers” are pushing the industry. If he can’t understand the concept of constructive criticism I believe that’s to his own detriment. I think this is a sensible awareness video that anyone could gather some insight on.

Jeremiah Johnson

Oh, what do I think about the video? Great topic and you will giver skate youtubers the world over to make more reaction reaction reaction to reaction vids. Everybody wins.

Iriemon

good vid, george creeps me tf out that guy definitely abuses his inhaler before hopping on that scooter. surprised no mention of the dan corrigan i feel like hes been on one lately with pumping shit into youtube

Ashton Ormsby

It's mind-boggling how youtubers like george poulos have absolutely no critical thinking skills. I honestly find it hard to believe that he is this incredulous to valid arguments for why Youtube skateboarding is terrible, and lacks this much self-awareness. This is not even specific to skateboarding, but to literally anything. He doesn't seem to understand that people have standards for what they like and dislike. Also, he loves to use the word "negativity" as much as possible yet it's so vague to what he is referring to. I honestly believe George just makes videos like this as a way to place blame on skateboarders for why his viewership is on steep decline.

blue3

I feel like kelvin is on Cariuma just for the support of Brazil

Jack Black

yeah i totally agree with what your take on the whole fake positivity thing. i remember watching a video by adam neely about why people feel so strongly about music they don't like and he brought up a quote like "the opposite of love isn't hatred, it's indifference". when you call out shit you think is whack I think it reflects just how much you care about it, you know? on the other hand, I also agree with you about how people give way too much of a shit about whats going on over at braille/revive or whatever, since its intended audience is different. but anyway yeah thanks joa

Kevin Yue

I will say when I first found skateboarding and didn’t know any better yeah I watch this bs. Once I found out there was way cooler shit which I learned mad quick I never really watched the “YouTube” skaters again. Maybe they do serve a purpose almost like how a Zumiez might get someone into skating... until they find out about real skateshops. But these dudes should in no way think they have to be perceived positively they are complete cornballs that is just the truth

Axel Anderson

I've followed George's career. George garnered his subscribers from his successful trick tip videos. Since then, he's been desperately floundering, trying to carve out a niche as a self-help skate channel about how hard it is to be a "creator". I lost interest because I don't want to hear about how stressful it is to make a few youtube videos per week. Try working a real job. Thats stressful. He's also as inoffensive as possible so he can make sure not to put off any potential subscribers. Whatever real personality he has gets lost because he is too worried about his count. And, sorry George, but your style is horrible besides the occasional nice kickflip.

Iriemon

biebel needs a reality show. dude went from having some of the best manuals around to looking like he eats 6000 calories of egg protein a day its so funny to me

Zachary

I think you expressed what a lot of people including myself have been feeling about skateboarding on YouTube.

Benjamin Coyle

the video was great also i really enjoy these longer ones while i'm working

nolan

Haven't watched yet but fucking poggerz, saw this get uploaded when I was at work but shit was longer than my lunch break. thanks joa.

Ashton Ormsby

42:00 watching this from my desk @ amazon 😔

nolan

Like you pretty much said, the lack of authenticity in the skate-youtube world is enormous, and it's easy to see through everyones fake positivity bullshit. Why can't people just keep it a buck?

tristen schern

speaking of how skaters have adapted to the new digital landscape, Brandon Biebel seems to have figured it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bg1qfQx6IA

joey t

This hour long video feels like someone is preparing to drop their first podcast episode…

Davis Campbell

This whole thing made me really thankful for you and your content. I have been very into youtube since I was young. That being said, my main hobby and interest of skateboarding never had a good nor true representative on the platform. That is why I have become a huge fan of your content. Thanks man.

Gabriel Snyder

When I first started skating, the first ever skateboarding content I watched was Arron kyros trick tips. I really enjoyed it back then and it was pretty much my introduction to skating but after a year in and being introduced to core skateboarding I stoped watching YouTube skaters it just wasn’t enjoyable after watching full length parts and shit like hyjinx and now recently your videos

Isaac

One thing I noticed about cariuma's instagram, is that they don't seem to understand their target audience at all. They post things on their posts saying "have you skated this spot?" Or "are you skating today?" Really makes it feel like they are totally disconnected from the audience they want to be a part of

Jonathan iannuzzi

There’s something strange about skateboard youtubers. It’s like a train wreck I can’t look away from. I don’t necessarily want to see it, yet I consistently find myself watching it

Thankyoucomeagain kamala

thanks joa

Will LaCosta

It's hard to express the joy I got seeing an hour long vid on here
