Cutting the Nine Club Some Slack (New Link)

HD is still processing, but this is more of a listening style video anyway.

Hockey video coming shorty (spoiler I think it is good)

Part of the reason I got upset about Dumb Data disfiguring my face for a joke, is that even if I wanted to I would not be able to do the same to his. Forgot to mention that.

Cutting the Nine Club Some Slack (New Link)

Comments

just subbed. extremely late to this but still wanted to provide some insight. massive skate nerd. love hearing perspectives from different skaters I grew up watching so naturally I do enjoy a lot of the nine club. I believe they want to create as relaxed of an environment as possible so that as many new guests actually want to come on the show. If they create this environment where they do criticize some things of course certain guests are going to take it in different ways and may not want to come on the show(look at how crob reacted to dumb datas "criticism"). also if no one else pointed it out, Roger was not kicked off. He left his seat on his on terms and said he was more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.

Tyler Benevento

no wonder i cant stand the nine club anymore, roger was the only one I really liked

Evan Carlson

this video made me realize they took roger off i literally had no idea. No

Evan Carlson

The nice club

Einherjar

I luv the way you're stating your facts. stay raw, hope to see you grow more.

נָאוֹר

Damn bailgungary got subtly dissed in this vid? :O

David

Good video but I don't think saying crob had a meltdown is totally fair. He didn't play it totally cool but I think he kept his composure a little bit.

John Franks

He in RP talking about IRL

Sick Nasty

This has to be about NycSkateDaily lol

Great comments thank you

One more thing: An experienced skateboarder has lived through more years throughout skateboarding; he or she would have lived through various changes within the industry: eras, trends, video releases, companies, controversies, mediums (VHS, DVD, magazines, internet), influential figures, etc. I would more feel comfortable hearing a perspective from the aforementioned skateboarder because he or she has simply “experienced” more skateboarding. This kind of skateboarder could provide interesting and potentially unique perspectives based upon that person’s lived history within skateboarding. There is no evidence (to my knowledge) of Dumb Data’s length of experience within the realm of skateboarding, and I feel that particularly leaves his opinions to be taken with a grain of salt. I think I’m done now; another cheers 🍻

Walter Farris

Just had this thought, so I will attempt to articulate this clearly. Regarding the mention of your “pass” and the skill level conversation; I feel it could be beneficial to consider not only skill level, but additionally overall experience in skateboarding. A skateborders’ skill level would most easily and immediately demonstrate how much effort he or she has put into achieving progress. Skill level could certainly hold a great degree of value, serving to “put your money where your mouth is,” “talk the talk and walk the walk,” etc. There are also skateboarders, though, who are capable of incredibly rapid progress, and can achieve proficiency far ahead of schedule, to say. Furthermore, there is a small fraction of quickly-learned, highly-skilled skateboarders who lose interest after a short period of time, and quit the hobby altogether. Experience, however, informs that the skateboarder cares largely enough to continue skateboarding for an extended period of time out of will and enjoyment. It can be argued that a skateboarder with lengthy experience, being several decades in this example, cares greatly about skateboarding, and his or her opinions carry a beneath-the-surface implication of value due to a proven lengthy and consistent passion. More experience can compensate for a lesser skill, but a good amount of each in conjunction help to best showcase credibility. I agree with your point that an individual does not necessarily need a fair degree of skill/experience to have good perspectives about skateboarding; I would even argue that an individual could be very lowly skilled, if at all, and still provide a valuable and interesting opinion about skateboarding out of sheer authentic interest. However, I do also feel that the lack of footage from Dumb Data at this point stands in the way of some of his credibility here, and I feel this would be a noticeably different narrative if this footage were to exist and be in the public domain. This was much lengthier than expected; hope this was somehow straightforward. Cheers 🍻

Walter Farris

thank you 🙂👍❤️🍔

Posh Bastard

Working on it right now, it’ll be for YouTube

when’s the hockey video dropping 👀❤️🇲🇽

Posh Bastard

Yo how do I get on the discord?

James Lord

Stupid beta need to shut his WatchMojo headass up!

Nrvnqsr

Dumb data just seems like an outsider looking in. Seeing him just using text for that live stream clip just seems so whack, hiding in the shadows trying to stir up drama when no one’s seen his face or any footy. I think a skaters opinion is much more respectable if I have at least seen some footage of them skating, filming yourself skating is just part of the hobby.

Benjamin Coyle

I agree that it would be subversive on some level, but probably too much towards the mainstream. And yeah, I agree that releasing 4 video parts in December became the boring mainstream, the meta version of SOTY to be subverted 😅

beatrice_fs_overcrook

Very true, and I think the internet overall is a toxic place that welcomes things like that. It totally wasn’t fair of data to stream snipe this very lowkey thing, but at the same time I still think it sort of is Robert’s fault for making those comments to internet overall. It’s not like he was on a Patreon video where it’s meant for only the eyes of a small set of viewers. And he called data out for most likely watching his stream, so he must have had at least an idea that data would see this and potentially respond. But I guess both sides hold valid points

Adrian Allen

I think I am bias for sure, but I do think context is important. I don’t think Chris Roberts is really deserving of having his live stream clipped and put on YouTube to embarrass him. I’ve said in the past is was more fair game in my case, but I really don’t think Crob deserves this bullshit imo

1

While I do understand a lot of where your coming from in this vid, do you think your “beef” with data has ultimately affected your bias on the matter? i.e would you feel the same/as strongly about your takes on the matter if say you and data had ended up getting along somewhere in the past? I feel like your take on responding to quick comments that people like crob make in a thought out video format has its points, I sort of also feel like that’s kind of the game you play with the internet in general, and when you make comments out into the public like that, you should know that you are opening yourself up for criticism in whatever form it takes.

I think time spent being a skateboarder (watching skating, learning skate history and culture, being involved in your skate community) is what further validates you opinions on skate culture not necessarily skill level, sum mfs jus be Unathletic mane

Morgasm

Yeah as someone who is also ass at skating I’ll have dialogue with the homies, but I’m not some governing body for the community/culture at large. I share my opinions, and always try to preface it as someone who can understand skateboarding, but doesn’t skate at an advanced level. I leave that to the dudes who have put in the years, blood, sweat, and tears to make skateboarding what it is.

Dylan Dietz

nice segway into talking about why ur the best for 30 mins

Lincoln Morley

super fair assessment. made me think about youtube criticism differently. thanks gh

angcient_rock

Crob calling him “Stupid Data” fucking killed me man. Sometimes the simplest shit is hilarious.

C

Ethos pathos logos in this mf

Bluntslideofdoom

Obviously, time in a discipline determines the weight of someone critiques on the subject. Think about it in terms of trades, wtf are you gonna think about someone’s opinion that just started carpentry vs a respected master? Easy debate.

Austin Manuel

idk why i said "might have." that shit would've been hilarious. props to mark tho. he did dat

Alexander Cantu

It’s cool bro thanks for the comment, I think usually the amount of time you do something can contribute to how well informed your opinion is

1

I don't think a person's skill level, or years of experience, has any bearing on the validity of their opinions. A shit, ill-informed idea is shit and ill-informed regardless of whose mouth it comes out of. And an opinion with a strong rational base loses nothing if it comes from someone new to the world. I think concern about the origins of an opinion betrays an insecurity in the receiver's mind regarding their own ability to parse information. Sorry for writing that like a fucking grad student.

b

*haven’t watched the vid yet* I agree that dumb data is lame most of the time but I would not have been surprised if Yuto won soty for those exact reasons (Olympics/thrasher gear),,,, so funny to think there might have been an “uproar” if suciu didn’t win after strategically dropping 35 parts in November

Alexander Cantu

Looking forward to your 9 club appearance, good luck

Skatepark Reality

I been saying someone had to cancel dumb data, I think we all can agree Bera needed to be stopped sure it was fucked sure you broke the man down but now he can pick himself n start a new. #canceldumbdata

Mo Oseguera

i think midget porn is kinda cool tbh also ability/prestige/time skating does help when your talking about the subject. as a carpenter, its hard to listen too someone who has zero experience or actual knowledge of the trade. i also think that you can have good input with a lack of experience, but when it comes to dick measuring contests on the internet the guy with more OJT is probably right. crob did sperg like a lil ninny tho. i think dumb data makes some good videos but hiding behind his anonymity is super wack. idk i enjoys alll the takes and alls the drama. thanks for posting more mr gifted hater.

Carter Lang

i’m just mad he conflated GTA RPing with LARPing.

Cody Randolph

Dorks and nerds are natural enemies. Most skaters are dorks (you, chris roberts) but dumb data is a nerd. Milhouse vs. Martin Prince.

Bob

Oh that’s my mistake then

1

You said twice now that they took Rodge off but I remember one episode where Chris said that it is Rodgers wish, he does not want to be in front of the camera and prefers staying in the background

Felix K.

Haha I commented back then under Dumb Datas video that his comment about Roberts playing GTA was so stupid. It pissed me off so much.

Felix K.

On one hand you can’t blame someone like Dumb data for not showing face and hiding his identity. But I also think that as skateboarders we’ve always wanted to keep skating core and gate keep skateboarding from outsiders. It’s what sets us apart from something like basketball. I don’t think you have to be good at skateboarding to talk about it tho, it’s more about just humanizing the content. I watched your videos before you ever put your footage out there and never had a problem, but you definitely received validation points for being able to manual.

thewhatofwhom

Dumb data is great for what his name suggests, quantifying skateboarding in a simple manner. The problem arises when he begins to venture off into different topics that, for me, require more than just his voice. It’s hard to take any critical or insightful information without feeling like I’m being spoken to by a robot.

Jeremiah Johnson

Also, Chris calling him Stupid Data is so fucking funny 😭

Werty

This video was so good! Glad I subscribed to your patreon. It’s been cool watching you mature and it’s ok to change your opinion on certain things as time goes on. Naturally you’re not making the same shit that you were making in the beginning. You were really fair with Dumb Data and your opinion on the nine club. Dumb Data’s content is entertaining but when he makes videos that are outside of his analytic realm it gets really weird. Personally, I’m not respecting Dumb Data’s opinion until he shows his face or shows his clips. That’s just me tho. All love.

Werty

I think it's pretty much mandatory that any skateboarding YouTuber should be good at skateboarding. As a shitty skateboarder myself, I cannot fathom starting a skate related YT channel. Like, what are you thinking?

Crash

I’ve tried watching dumb data a few times and he’s just boring as hell.

Sam J

Lot of good points. I follow dumb data but mostly just as filler content because there isn't much good to watch between your uploads and I get bored. I agree with most of your points especially the uneven playing field but the 9 clubs what it is and I watch it rarely but sometimes they have good guests. Idk anyone can have an opinion but when you speak non objectively about skating most people won't CARE about that opinion as much unless you have footy to back it up. I like dumbs actual data driven stuff sometimes but the format gets stale and wish he'd keep it more objective/stat driven about skating.

Frontside shitslide

There is such a dearth of quality skateboard content out there that I find myself watching most Dumb Data videos. I don’t enjoy it in the slightest but it has definitely helped me understand how a lot of people interact with skateboarding in the same way a lot of people interact with regular sports. They like the people who are “the best at it”. I think between yourself and DD you are filling the gap on some much needed punditry when it comes to skateboarding. Where you are the entertaining color commentator to Dumb Data’s lifeless reading of the score, and half time announcements.

Nature Table

dumb data sucks, interesting gimmick for one or two videos but mostly boring i will say the crob livestreams seem very chill, might pop in once in a while lol

microwaverr

this the only channel i can fathom paying for

Jose Hernandez

Yeeeeeeeew! Thanks for the upload. My belly is now full again.

Frontside shitslide

Why I'm GH's Patreon: because of how Joa analyses skate in general, you can tell he understands skate mechanics, trends, culture and history, this is hard to master if you haven't skated for a few decades. Clip reviews of Max Palmer's or Limousine's parts are full of interesting comments, review of Tim & Henry's Pack of Lies with Ted made so good for my soul. Why I think Dumb Data sucks: Just check his review on the latest SOTY, he was so sure about Yuto winning because he won olympic gold and wore expensive Thrasher gear. You can tell Dumb Data don't fully understand skateboarding, or barely understand how it works. Just found a niche to explore numbers on BATB and SLS and it kinda stuck to this format because he can't talk about anything else in skating. BTW he is obsessed by you Joa.

beatrice_fs_overcrook

your dog is cute

Luke

They should have called it "Hockey, the dirt bag Nike edition"

sillybilly

More like stupid beta

Cooter Johnson Jr.

Never pay attention to a channel that gives that much of a shit about BATB. That's some sociopath behavior.

JP

It gets cuter every time y'all quarrel

dsktvk

I think some kind of level of experience is required for talking shit about stuff in skateboarding. People can have their opinions, and im not saying everyone needs to be pro or doing the hardest tricks to have an opinion about skateboarding but i see so many kids nowadays who've been skating for half a year and just learnt how to kickflip having the most out there and over the top takes. Which is fine, to each their own, but its hard to take some kid whos been skating for a year and has an instagram news page serious when they start mindlessly blabbering about how mark suciu is wack and then fail to articulate why they think mark suciu is wack.

CarharttFinalBoss

Steve is more okay to shit on because so much power and influence and money for scientology overlords.. you were super on point in this video bruz and your skating level didn't determine the value of your opinions on skating but it did reinforce some of them and has definitely inspired me to branch out in the trick selection

Patrick Berryman

I don't think your level of skating changed a lot of things for me. Yes the fact that you're pretty good helps. But what I liked at the beginning, and still does, is the fact that you speak to a lot of person that became out of touch with the path skateboarding was taking. I was craving a bit a thought out trash talking (like the Bunt for instance). And dumb data has his genre of content which I'm not a fan of because it's getting old now the Excel tab voice over analysis. And when he goes beyond this, and you're right about it, he doesn't have the critical thinking that you, and others, have

Simon Coderey

That’s good, I like a lot of videos. Nobody is perfect I’m not trying to make people dislike him/ his videos but he does employ certain practices I do not agree with

1

I still like dumb data after watching this

Rene

Hes forever stupid data from here on out
