In this case, imo it’s unfair to want the actual symbolic logo removed and then also complain about the new logo because it’s too safe. I would also argue that the independent logo, just like the iron cross (as you said), no longer bears the meaning of the previous iteration of a symbol. The logo not only looks different enough to distinguish it but it’s context is also far removed from what the iron cross represents. It just seems somewhat contradictory to me to both say that logos can mean different things in different times and contexts yet then also invoke the previous iteration and time period’s context. I also don’t really find the argument that the artist drew from the iron cross as a reference as condemning of the logo in any way; taking striking and infamous symbols or motifs and reworking them into something new is artists’ bread and butter imo haha. It almost feels like you beg the question a bit when you describe how the logo in question could be ‘perceived’ as bad, but not ‘why’ (fundamentally; ie is the independent logo part of an upswing in spreading violent ideology to skaters across the US?) it’s bad. Just some thoughts and questions, this probably came off pretty pretentious or patronizing but I genuinely love your stuff and just wanted to give some hopefully good faith feedback. Edit: definitely don’t agree with pretty much anything else that the guy said haha😂

There are statistics that any one group of people is inherently better at a task than someone else. Don’t know the exact statistic for men’s to women’s features in skate videos before the year 2000 but I bet it’s something like 100 to 1. I knew boys that skated, and that made it easy for me to get into skating (even though I identify nb now). I didn’t meet a girl who skated until I was 16 which was 7 years into skating for me. If I switch shoes with someone in the opposite position I’m less than .5% as likely to ever touch a skateboard, let alone excel at it.

2022-11-11 04:39:16 +0000 UTCPersonally I think the true discrepancy has to do with time differentials in cis men’s and women’s skateboarding. If you look at men’s skateboarding now, (especially from a young boy’s perspective) it’s incredibly normalized for people like you to be excelling at skateboarding, and even though there is a frame of reference for young girls today, it is not nearly as exposed, and the amount of people to push you down that 12 rail is smaller. Imo womens skateboarding today is ahead of mens skateboarding in the early 90s, and from a perception of exposure, that’s exactly where women's skateboarding is right now. It’s like a foot race where men get a 25 year head start, and now that women have entered the race they are expected to be at the finish line with everyone else. I think that trans women in contests is a great thing personally, but I understand your discrepancies as well. However I think the low expectations held for women by the community generally creates an environment that is non conducive to rapid progression. As a side note, my other athletic hobby is rock climbing, and currently in the highest echelon of rock climbing, cis men and women are pretty close to neck and neck. Women do a ton of firsts, and gender is generally not a good indicator of potential. I think that trans individuals/nb individuals are marginalized and cis women are too, I have full faith that in 20 years women will be pushing the envelope of skateboarding alongside every other gender id.

There will always be advantages in sports but the advantage among sexes is larger than the advantage in segregated sports. Same reason why why the number #300 tennis mens player can beat the #1 ranked womens tennis player. It’s about the degrees to which there is an advantage

There are all kinds of natural advantages people have in sports. Michael Phelps wingspan is a famous one. Should someone like that be banned from the sport for a natural advantage os the question. So that’s why questioning that is labeled as transphobic since the line is arbitrary but for whatever logic in one’s brain it needs to be drawn at trans people.

I see the best local skaters helping newer skaters kick turn at the park. That would have never happened in the early 2000s.

That often invoked golden era when "different people with different opinions could still be friends" just turns out to be an era when the only "people with opinions" were straight white men (you're not mentioning your mother, just your father) who all had a nice living wage and believed in endless progress into the future. Now that our future has turned out to be severely imperiled, jobs aren't so safe anymore and disenfranchised/exploited groups finally have a voice, "suddenly"we can't agree anymore...

Please show me one trans woman skater who's gonna challenge Rayssa. All the "best" trans skaters are non-contest skaters while for the biological women it seems reversed. I'd love to know your take on why trans and queer skaters are mainly taking the artistic career path while biologically female skating is so heavily contest centered today.

For the culture war stuff, I used to consider myself fairly progressive, but once it became clear I was required to say I believe things that aren't true and ignore the consequences of things, I bailed on politics. The truth is hard to come by and won't make you many friends, no wonder it's so unpopular.
