I work at the Cheesecake Factory in SF so I go outside and take my break at Union Square. Last night I found a little corner to chill, and T-Funk and a small group of derels were getting hammered from tall cans in the bottom corner of Union Square, displaced by the ice skating and Christmas tree. I wanted to say “commiserations!” but I just took the scene in and ripped my dab pen instead. It was a little bit melancholy 😔

The train track gap tricks look so stupid, turning a 45° angle on the run up, landing on the blind bumps, flopping around all over the place… and the gap is pretty unimpressive in the context of street skating. People have done such insane gaps, and sought out the most amazing spots at any cost. Tyshawn’s footage all looks local shot between his apartment and his favorite bodega. He’s insulated with sycophants, so all his ideas, spots and trick selections are met with resounding praise and applause. The oceans of sycophants expand out around Tyshawn to include most the skate industry and the Supreme-embedded Thrasher magazine.

Musical metaphor - Tyshawns skating is kinda like Sonny Stitts playing to me. He isn't the most creative cat, contributing new songs and approaches to the medium, but his excellent execution and mastery of technique are undeniable. If I'm trying to learn a song I know Stitts version will be brilliant source material. While I can't learn much of TJs bag in the same way (I'm sure some could) I do appreciate his straight forward "im gonna just do the hardest shit here" approach. The repetition of spots, particularly NY ones plays into the king vibe, I didn't mind seeing him destroy that rail to bank but I did like seeing his footage in Europe in Blessed etc. Hope turns his ambition with King into lots of trips n clips.

I thought Tyshawn was gonna take it for sure. I wanted Louie to take it because he’s been fucked over and eclipsed like three years in a row and I feel like he deserves it. I love TFunk and some of his tricks were stupid gnarly, but he just didn’t have the IT factor this year IMO. And as for the ‘Jah… unreal skating but I couldn’t see thrasher giving SOTY to him unless it is literally undeniable. Ultimately tho, we as skaters win because we got to see sick ass shit getting thrown down

Watch the Louie part a few times before you make a decision, definitely the best video part this year for trick selection, variety of spots, filming and editing. Ask yourself with video could you watch on repeat? The T-funk one is excellent too, so it’s a tough call. The other two guys are a bit too one sided for my taste.

People forget Nyjah has some serious SA allegations. Dont you think it would be off putting if Thrasher gave a predator SOTY? Would be curious to hear your thoughts. I really hope Louie or T-Funk wins SOTY. Thrasher is supposed to be different than Street League/Berrics/Braille because it's supposed to represent skateboarding as a lifestyle. Louie and T-Funk both better represent the essence of that right now because you can tell they purely love skateboarding when they're doing it and it's their favorite thing to do with their time. Tyshawn and Jah both seem like winning SOTY would just be a means to an end for them. For Tyshawn it just seems like it's to promote his own brands and for the Jah it would just be to make more money with sponsorship attention (maybe ego boost too), like everything else he does. If SOTY is now just going to go to whoever just does the most technically hardest handrail and big gap tricks, then the criteria for who wins SOTY is getting dangerously close to the criteria for winning Street League. Guys like Grant Taylor, Cardiel, Mason Silva, probably wouldn't win many SL contests had they tried, but they represent something that contest career skaters don't quite understand. And Thrasher is supposed to be the exact opposite of Street League/Olympics/Contest World as I take it

I think it should be based on who is adding something to skateing, not popping higher or grinding further but using terrain differently and navigating through cities in a way that isn’t as common as everyone else, so even tho it’s probably not going to happen that’s why I would choose tfunk because he is just showing more ways to navigate through a city and use different obstacles instead of doing the same things that have always been done but just a couple inches higher (tj) or a couple feet longer (nyjah)

Honestly, I really hope Louie gets it. He's incredibly talented, been in the skate industry for super long, has the sponsors to back it (unfortunately, this matters) and puts out consistent, high quality footage (shout out to Ryan Lee) with creative tricks and spots. The SOTY winner list is long, and in my opinion, I think he deserves to be on it.

There is one approach to choose SOTY (sometimes used, not always) which is picking someone who had at least one video part that was a bit ahead of its time and contribute to skateboarding's progression. This is why we go back to these video parts and they still feel memorable and not forgettable. - Geoff, Arto and Apples in the Flip videos - Danny in the DC video - MJ in Fully Flared - Milton in Demolicion, and a few more Looking from this perspective, + my own personal bias, my guess is that Nyjah's Need That does the job, but only time will tell, and he is my least favourite from this list.

the problem with the crown logo deck is not the logo itself but the space it occupies on the deck. The logo is not centered vertically and it goes from edge to edge of the board horizontally. It would look a lot more cohesive if there was at least a margin on each side of it, right now it just looks like they gave a PNG of their logo to a random site like redbubble and asked them to print it on a skateboard

I don't agree with the part of you saying Louie's like a jack of all trades master of none type skater however, I do feel that Tyshawn and Nyjah both have that "exhausting" effect in their parts. T-Funk and Louie have infinitely more entertaining and nuanced style of skating vs the freak-of-nature-high-performance-athlete vibe I get from the other two. At the end of the day it's all preference but I do feel like T-Funk and Louie embody the spirit of skateboarding more. Leaning towards the former but only because Tristan's a little more punk-rock and has a bit more personality imo.

I don't think that an analytic framework is really necessary in these debates; there is a reason we don't determine the quality of paintings by the amount of brush-strokes or music by the variety of notes. Skateboarding is similar in this regard - determining aesthetic value will generally boil down to taste. That being said, I think that you've underappreciated the value of simplicity in regards to Tyshawn's skating. His style is appealing because its simplicity makes it "relatable" in a way that Louie's ultra-precision-based creativity or Nyjah's "daredevil" antics are not; most can't match Louie's or Nyjah's blend of skills. However, even without Tyshawn's pop, his trick and spot-selection present a reduced and even minimalist approach to skateboarding that is appealing because it is paradoxically very attainable. Tyshawn elevated the classic parking lot to a viable skatespot with his can skating - and it is this approach that is extremely classic and even nostalgic and part of his broad appeal. Beyond that it is extremely easy to imagine oneself learning the tricks that Tyshawn does and applying them in small scale to the obstacles that are within reach for one's skill level. It isn't so easy to do that for Louie or Nyjah.

I’m with T Funk even though you made some good points about Louie. Loved Louie’s part but T Funk had way more grit and when you consider the baker video and the cover he truly pushed the envelope. I don’t hate Tyshawn’s contribution this year either that nollie flip into the mosaic bank was fried, but unless King comes out with another drop with better graphics I feel like it’s gonna sink (Mansa Musa is kinda cool it’s representative of Tyshawn and it’s legible enough I guess but it wouldn’t be my first choice at a skate shop, maybe because I’m painfully white).

If you look at Dylan's part in Cherry, all but one or two plus the guest tricks are filmed in long lens zoom. Almost the entire part was fisheye follow filmed. I think this was because Dylan was so particular and opinionated that he didn't let Strobeck fuck around with his clips and made him film proper. Tyshawn is at the same point in his career where he needs to take charge and tell Bill no when he tries to fuck around. I'm actually happy davonte jolly seems to be the main filmer behind King now.

Deep down I know it's Nyjah. I am a big Tyshawn fan and I would love to see him win, but I am doubtful. However, I didn't expect him to get it in 2018 either. T-Funk feels like the skater who represents the thrasher mentality the most, so I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow snuck away with it. Shoutout to Louie that guy is cool too.
