Yeah, Guy was the third person in the running for SOTY that year, and I agree he also deserved it and would have been a better choice. I just didn't mention him to avoid my post being too long, but you elaborated on that far better than I could have. I'm just more of a fan of figgy's style of skating personally. I think he had multiple parts and I remember constantly seeing footage of him on thrasher, then was just blown away at the scale of some of the switch tricks he was doing for the time period. I thought it was definitely between figgy and guy, and I remember being so disoriented when David Gonzalez won. That's when I felt they started to choose a SOTY based on image and how that individual could represent or benefit Thrasher. It was the beginning of some questionable SOTY choices (with many exceptions, AVE included), and yeah I agree that Thrasher may be on a path of diminishing importance. Honestly, I hope so because there're so many other sick skate mags and media outlets that better represent what I understand core underground skateboarding to be

2022-12-13 18:49:16 +0000 UTCGuy Mariano I believe lost to David Gonzales and if not I remember being 2013 because that’s when pretty sweet came out and everyone was going nuts that Guy just did what Eric did back in ‘03 for yeah right by wowing us with a ground breaking tech rail trick (switch tre nosegrind) and being at the age that he was and giving us that and being stubbed the SOTY win…that’s when I personally saw that SOTY decline. The last couple years have been completely off pretty much except for 2015 because AVE killed that Vans video and he was up there in age during that time as well but in terms of image I can see why they chose him but if that’s the case Brian Anderson was SOTY back in like ‘97 and he’s from the girl/chocolate party so idk why you wouldn’t give it to someone like GUY of all people but from I can see it’s all about politics with Thrasher. I said it before recently and now it’s starting to stick..Thrasher is going out in terms out being the premier skate platform for content or anything skateboarding right now, at one point they weren’t and it looks to be going back to that

2022-12-13 04:11:40 +0000 UTCthey should wait til the year is actually over before awarding it, i don't get the urgency. like i think when "john's vid" came out in December a couple years ago soty had already been given out. also, i like soty being more at Thrasher's discretion, more about who they like or who they feel should represent skateboarding. feels like the days of guys like Salman Agah, Chris Senn, Brian Anderson getting it are over. i don't like how competitive and straight forward it is now, seems counter to the spirit of skateboarding, or at least Thrasher's skateboarding.

Fuck transparency and voting for soty, fuck soty runs and the gamification of it all, as if there are rules and strats and metas that matter. During the game awards ppl were going into a full blown meltdown when a game they liked didn’t win and today the same thing is happening with the golden globes nomination being announced. 2022-12-12 19:58:26 +0000 UTCI'm curious about how they will handle Tyshawn when he shall go for soty another time. For now, he won it in a five year time span (like Chris Cole did: 2005/2009). And I think that these two years will not be the best he can do. So assuming he will just get better - especifically at his craft at of jumping high and/or long - and nobody can keep up, how will they not give it to him everytime he's putting out footage. Will they increasingly make it more obvious that the person with the best "play by our rules, then you'll get it"-approach will win, or what is this fiesta going to turn into, if they will not (like this year with nyjah) give the title to the person that perfected their ideal skater the best? In addition to that, would argue Nyjah should have won the trophy, since the archive of Thrasher released footage is similiar with Nyjah's skating, like trickwise. Tricks themselves are the best way of comparing skaters performances and Trasher most commonly posts Streetstyle skateboarding, e.g. grinding, flipping, manualling or riding the board in a technically impressive manner. Nyjah would by any means fit in Thrasher's portfolio of prestend skaters, while doing the hardest shit. He is like the prime example of my point prior, that once a person is that good at skating, Thrasher is sort of in a need to find an excuse of not giving that person the trophy, since the most dangerous/technically ambitious skating would then have to win everytime. That might leave the opportunity for Nyjah, to always win soty when he pleases. Besides all that, it is quite common in other sports, that a individual won the highest form of solo reward several times in a row.

There are people counting SOTY like NBA titles, and it started this jock vibe about winning and others loosing. But as mentioned in the video, it is about contribution to a culture/physical activity, and not defeating others. And from my point of view, Tyshawn's contribution and recognition was already made, it was time to recognise other people's contributions.

2022-12-12 09:08:36 +0000 UTCShould people be allowed to win more than once? - Danny Way won twice with 13 years of difference, so 2 different skate eras, and on the second one he invented the Mega ramp - Chris Cole won twice with 4 years of difference, even though he was demolishing street skating, already felt like the same flavour too soon. - Tyshawn with also 4 years of difference definitely felt the same flavour with even less variety of tricks and skating. If SOTY is about to look back and "show to the world what skateboarding is about" according to Phelps, skateboarding in 2018 and 2022 definitely wasn't about jumping trash cans and flat gaps on the same spots.

David Gonzalez won for a part that was primarily back boardslides, 50-50s, and kickflips into back boards or 50-50s... In my hazy recollection at least. Figgy should have won imo. His bake and destroy part is full of switch handrail tricks that pushed what was possible... and he switch bs flipped the triple set that tyshawn would later switch back heel in 2018. That was the beginning of my disillusionment with Thrasher and where I think SOTY began to decline. I also was bummed tyshawn won in 2018 because Evan Smith was eating a bunch of mushrooms and doing the craziest shit literally all year long. Just curious what your opinion is of some previous SOTYs. 2012, 2018 or any year where you felt like thrasher chose a winner for questionable reasons?

So if a skater didn’t get SOTY, then they may give video part of the year by skateboarder mag..Readers choice by transworld mag..they even had years best AM…SLAP magazine had their own stuff before it was just the message board..when everything went digital (Instagram/YouTube etc.) that’s when the skate mags eventually went out. Dylan rieder got video part of the year 2014 by the skateboard mag for his part in cherry..obviously well deserved but he didn’t get skater of the year. I was hyped he got something for how hard he killed that part but what I’m trying to say is that there needs to be more awards and if so then SOTY wouldn’t be cared about as much..or at least if the right person won it which seems to not have happen in awhile lol
