QS has been around since 2005. I'm sure that there are other lateral platforms that might be be better examples. My point is that, save for a few cool videos here and there, MOST of the content that Jenkem releases not much better than what individual YouTubers or instagram people do, and can't really compare favorably to what sites like QS do.

I liked the video and love everything you did so far with Ted… I just did not really understand the criticism for Larry and also to finish the video like that. Maybe I am too stupid but what was the point? I don’t necessary think that he is doing an amazing job in their videos, not even in the interview with you imo, but he seems to be just a nice skater guy that sees everything about skating positive, maybe a little bit like the guys on the nine club. And I don’t know his area of responsibility at Jenkem but I believe that he does not have any say in the (definitely negative) things you talked about?! Isn’t he almost the last link in the chain?

Also if y'all weren't so compulsively scared of sounding political you could have put a name to what you spend 30 mins of the video accusing Jenkem of: they're participating in, profiting off and thus accellerating the "race to the bottom". Not paying for content, neglectful treatment of contributors, stealing ideas, blurring the lines between actual content and paid advertising, etc. And going from there you could've talked about how to protect "us" from just being scaled back by relentless corporations and profiteers (because there ARE ways): unions, workers rights, blacklists and whistle-blower platforms. Skateboarding is generating more money than ever, big corporations aren't scaling back because they have to, but because they've realised they can. Don't give quality writing away for free. Ask for written contracts. Hold people to some goddamn standards!

Thanks for this rare behind the scenes insight. And nice to finally have something tangible to explain the increasingly stale taste I've been getting from Jenkem over the last few years. One criticism I kind of found lacking though was when Ted discredited their "adding to the culture". At least in the beginning they filled an undeniable void of irreverent, critical and uncomfortably honest voices in the industry. Some of those stoned vid reviews were hilarious. Do the examples that Ted mentioned, Quartersnacks, etc, do that? First thing I found on Village Psychic was a bigbrain piece on plaza skating - nice but doesnt exactly fuel my craving for some loudnouth punkness. I may be unfair here but Ted seems a bit vanilla (dar I say stanny) when it comes to skateboarding. Like when he refused to accept basic laws of optics and geometry just so he could keep Tyshawn on his pedestal. Maybe Ted's "adding to the culture" only includes pure celebration, nerddom and safe lowest-common-denominator criticism a la Kyle Beachy (actually can we have a Kyle Beachy takedown that guy annoys me to no end)? I wonder how valuable Ted really finds Joa... ;) The value I saw in early Jenkem was getting some of the fuck you independent spirit that I get from Joa today. Current Jenkem, without a doubt, has lost that vibe and nobody embodies that better than Mr compulsive smile Larry Lanza, but still, I would say that they DID add to the culture quite substantially at some point and ignoring that is a bit unfair maybe?

Don’t send or fill out example packets or anything like pitch ideas without signing a contract saying they can’t use or interpret your words without a fee. Mero from Desus and Mero literally wrote most of the first season for Key and Peele without pay, because he filled out the packet the studio gave to him and they never reached back out to him because they just got his best ideas for free.

It's interesting to hear your and Ted's experiences + the stories in the comments. I remember I hit up jenkem one time to come do a story on the bowl in bio in ohio. They were totally stoked and said they would get back to me, but just never did lol. I never worked out the logistics or planned for anything, so I guess it wasn't that big of a deal considering I was the one who originally asked them to come down. It was just confusing to me why they were super down and then all the sudden never hit me back. It did show me that jenkem lacked professionalism and maybe wasn't as sick as I thought. I wonder about the stories we don't know about... I feel like this was a topic of discussion that was a long time coming.

The stories in the comments are nothing new in the world of publishing(?)/news aggregation. (Some of this aligns with the Doubty guy's problem too.) Don't give your work/services away on good faith. 99/100 times the favor will not be returned or the other party will disproportionately reap the benefits. Other than getting them to sign a contract (or a usage license agreement - i.e., 'print only, no web reproduction' or 'usage is only granted for one year', etc.), there's nothing anyone can really do after the fact. You just have to be cautious and/or not afraid to ask for certain things in return. If Jenkem lifted quotes whole cloth from another publication, that's another story.

I was in the process of getting a job there and they first asked me to make a list of ideas/pitches for videos or articles. I sent them a bunch and like you said, their enthusiasm quickly fizzled out and nothing ever materialized. A few weeks later, two of my pitches got modified slightly and turned into videos. I proposed a Jenkem Mix with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr and then they dropped a Parts video with him. I proposed doing a segment on a Chinese skate crew and they do a video on a different Chinese skate crew. I can’t help but feel like they just stole my ideas.

Jenkem sent me to film/interview at a wheel manufacturer in Virginia. Once I traveled up there (from NC), with my family in tow, I sent them the footage only for them to tell me that I didn't have enough b-roll. So what did I do? I went back to the factory just to shoot b-roll!! I immediately wetransferred Alexis the files when we got back and he seemed excited to have the piece. So I wait and wait for a few months and finally he emails me to tell me that it really doesn't match their current vibe or whatever. That's fine but I expected to have some sort of reimbursement or something for the travel expenses and time that I had to take off of work. With no thanks or acknowledgement I crawled back into my hole and continued making subpar skate videos with my friends.
