The Expanse Ep 2x6 Full Reaction!

Comments

Well, it IS hard sci-fi with the protomolecule being the exception that proves the rule. If the rest of the show wasn’t as grounded in science and reality, the protomolecule wouldn’t be as extraordinary.

Connor Donlon

Ya Nerdy! 🀣

stuart greenley

Nerdy pretty much summed it up, but I have to agree, one of the coolest things about the Expanse is that it's a look at how characters react when their own hard scifi/magic system crosses paths with a soft scifi/magic system. Great stuff.

Quark's Bar

Yes, but we both know how some of them can't let it go, but I'm pretty sure Clarus will keep Nerdy from going off the deep end lol.

Deana DeWall

You need a good telescope, but they say you can still see Epstein out there, a century later, speeding further and further away from the system.

Quark's Bar

Moon of Jupiter. Venus has no moons.

Avasarala's "I will rain down hellfire" speech is epic, and one of my favorite moments in the entire series. (Shoreh ... she's an artist.) And remember: the character Avasarala was an Earth-first politician that casually tortured belters and then went for drinks. At the end of that scene, Errinwright had to change his knickers.

Eldon

Yeah, I read the books before the show, and I didn't care how they broke it up. The fact they were making it was enough.

Alan Eschenbacher

Weaving the Drive novella into this episode is unexpected but perfect.

Alan Eschenbacher

I always giggle at that line when Fred tells Holden, "I get the feeling you're not being straight with me." I imagine there's a blooper reel somewhere with Steven Strait responding, "No, right now I'm being Holden." It's the little things.

Adam Pacio

So true. But all reactors seem to overthink it at this point.

Strap in; it's just beginning. As crazy as it sounds, season 1 was the "awkward first season" and season 2 is where they find their groove. Every season is better until it hits consistent 100% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It then stays there until they end the series.

Apparently the show is really good at integrating various short stories written by the same authors in addition to novels which build the main series. One of such stories will be about Amos and is very rewarding. The Martian marines are close to Jupiter which has over 50 moons, With the Epstein drive humanity really colonised the Solar System and Ganymede offers something very useful in the outer planets - its own magnetosphere. Wes Chatham (Amos), who served in the US military, runs a podcast together with one of the writers of the books - Ty Franck and they both admitted several times that the entire team was still learning and sometimes mistakes still happened in initial 2 seasons. One of those was still a disconnect between special effect team and the acting team i.e. in this episode there really should be more cover on Ganymede where the Martian marines were deploying to repulse 'UNN attack', but not many people from film making understand how soldiers fight in real life. During the series the cooperation between various parts of the team and the cast was getting better and better - everybody was learning how to use various tools more efficiently and even invented some for the show. It is simply amazing in some episodes e.g. in one in season 5 there is a realtively short scene which might be the space battle with the best, most accurate special effects on screen EVER. There are even tiny details lasting less than a second which are still there because that would happen in real life with this technology. Enjoying your speculations as always. Take care!

You are going to be so surprised when "The Work" is finally revealed.

Bryce Carlson

The Protomolecule is a fine example of Clarke's Third Law.

Bryce Carlson

Bobbie (Gunny) and her squad were on Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter, which is obviously not close to Venus lol. You're heading down a rabbit hole with the alien stuff, but it is funny.

Deana DeWall

I have pointed out in the past and shall continue to do so, that Chrisjen Avarsarela is a very savvy political operator who chooses to appear harmless until she has to break her foot off in somebody's arse.

Bryce Carlson

I love this episode a lot. You get a lot if character development with our Roci crew and Chrisjen plus the whole crazy thing at the end with Bobbie. Watching people react to Jim "confessing" that he and Naomi have hooked up to Amos and Alex alway brings joy to heart. Yall didn't disappoint.

Daxeah

Nope. Ganymede is a moon of Jupiter. Ganymede is a agricultural moon that produces food for the Belt. Sunlight is reflected onto the surface with the help of several large mirror arrays in stationary orbit above. Also, Amos revealed something very important about how he classifies/views everyone. "The way I see it, there's only 3 kinds of people in the world. The bad ones, the ones you follow, and the ones you need to protect." It's an important line and he lives by it. He's been giving hints about his background. Make sure you don't miss them.

Scott Fellows

Ganymede is a moon of Jupiter, not Venus. :)

Ryan Hughes

MCRN Gunnery Sgt Bobbie Draper guys. Remember the name. It's going to be important.

Les Green

The battle that Bobbie was in, was on Ganymede, which is a moon of Jupiter.

Michael Bryson

The Algorithm goddess for this episode is Gunnery sergeant Roberta Draper (You'll hear people call her both Gunny, the nickname for her rank, and Bobbi, the nickname for her name at different points) BTW In a previous episode Bobbi's commander Lt. Sutton told them they'd be going to Ganymede (Jupiter's Largest moon and the only moon known to have its own magnetic field), which Bobbi then called "Farm Patrol" (Because it produces the third most food of any place in the solar system after Earth and Mars) so that's where the firefight with the weird thing happened. I was always bothered a bit when people just straight up call the Expanse Hard Sci Fi, because while it's true for all the human tech, and they're the first TV show to get a lot of the space stuff accurate(which I absolutely loved!!), the protomolocule does break our understanding of physics(Like when Miller pointed out that Eros was accelerating away from the Roci and he felt no acceleration while the Roci was pulling serious Gs. trying to follow) I'm glad that characters in the show acknowledge it, and it's still the closest to hard sci-fi of any space TV show yet.

Threk

The show is hard scifi in that everything in it is scientifically based, even if at levels that are not possible in reality. Even with Protomolecule Eros, Naomi and Amos took the time to explain that while it is going past anything they could do, it's still within the laws of physics.

Bloo

Yay! The ending to this episode is how book 2 starts! Also, the Epstein flashbacks is a novella that they adapted into this episode.
