The Expanse Ep 2x7 Full Reaction!

Comments

From Dawes' perspective, the Inners - Earth and Mars - both already have the protomolecule, and they will happily use it again. They already use the Belters as slaves - remember what happened at Anderson Station? You can't live your life with a gun to your head, trusting in the mercy of those holding the trigger, especially when the Inners have shown time and time again that they have no mercy.

For what it is worth and not knowing any of the back story, I always sensed Naomi's hesitation in this scene. Alex practically opens her hand and shoves the gun into it and she goes along only because in the moment she knows she has to play defense just in case something happens when the door opens. She is a smart and brave person, who also hates guns!

Attack On Titan S4 will start going up on Thursday

Nerdy Nightly

Are they still traveling ? I haven’t seen any other posts on attack on Titan , it’s been 10 days

Armani

I fully expect Nerdy to have an OPA tattoo next episode, Question is will Clarus allow him back to team 🌎………🤔 NOT!!!!!!!

stuart greenley

All right then, I remembered it uncorrectly. Thank you for correcting me. I will add and EDIT line in my initial comment.

Tom M

If I'm not mistaken, the error that Ty was referencing with Naomi and a gun was for the S2 poster that SyFy made. Not only did it have Naomi holding a large gun, but Holden was wearing oversized Belter gear and none of them had gloves for some reason. Ty found the poster deeply stupid and mentioned that it was added evidence for him that SyFy never really understood what The Expanse actually is. I just rewatched that Ty & That Guy clip for this episode, and it seemed like Ty was happy with the scene. It was intentionally done this way to demonstrate her hesitation about guns.

Dawes is a great character, the actor who plays him is just phenomenal in any role. But Drummer?! Cries in Drummer sadness 😂. She’s easily one of my favorites (too many good people to pick just one). I’m glad y’all are enjoying it as much as we are watching again. Another great reaction!

Ashley Snow

I think Nerdy's read on Dawes here is pretty wrong. Dawes is interested in power more than he's interested in benefiting all Belters. He walks into that meeting, sows discord in order to divide the factions and alienate Fred Johnson and Holden. He's manipulative and self-interested. Yes, he's fun to watch, but don't mistake him for a humanitarian. He's a politician as much as Errinwright is. And Clarus is quite right that it is not the policy of Earth's government to be using the protomolecule against the Belt or against Mars, at this point. It is isolated individuals, just as Dawes says about good and evil in a moment of pure projection: bad men will do things thinking they are working to help humanity. As for what's actually going on with the protomolecule, i suggest you watch and wait; you have been leaping to inaccurate conclusions.

Jefferson Ogata

Can't wait for the next episode. It starts to really get into the meat of book 2!

Matthew Steinhaus

What I wrote that was actually a conclusion of Ty Franck from podcast Ty and That Guy. He disliked the way the scene was done. Of course you are correct about the initial hesitation shown by Naomi, but overall the entire weapon thing was considered a wrong idea by one of the writers of the novels. His words are not a gospel so thank you for adding a different perspective, highly appreciated - I wrote my post just after watching the reaction around 1 a.m. so didn't consider other options.

Tom M

I’ve got to admit, I’m giddy with excitement to see their reaction to the upcoming episodes. So unpredictable the upcoming journey.

Richard Craig

I totally agree. Sometimes I wonder if it's Jared's brilliant acting, the script or maybe just the gray areas many/if not all characters in the show share.

Deana DeWall

Nope. But your comment most assuredly is.

Deana DeWall

I thought maybe weeks were just different in Canada. (I'm sure SWC in London was a hit to the schedule. )

Dan Pettit

This is a spoiler, thay have not revealed who the person helping them in Fred's crew is, if there is a traitor in his crew.

Really great discussion at the end, particularly your guys' difference of opinion on Dawes. Sometimes reactors (and people in general upon first viewing) get a little too fixated on their own views and become dismissive of characters they don't agree with. The fact that you guys felt differently about Dawes here really shined a light on why that is a mistake, and hopefully you guys continue doing what you're doing. I think watching the show with at least one other person is great for exactly this reason. The show really works hard at giving each character (and I truly mean *each* character) reasons for doing what they do. I feel like Dawes is speaking to the audience when he says not to focus on "Good or Bad" because it'll just confuse you. I think the most rewarding and richest experience you could have watching this show, is by opening yourself up to each point of view, even if you disagree with them. And its great to see that you guys definitely seem willing to do that! Not every reactor does. I will just say with Dawes, remember that he did abandon Julie Mao and left her to die. He then tried to cover up his involvement by bribing Miller and when that didn't work, he ordered Miller's execution in the air-lock. Not to mention that he bribes pretty much everyone, including the police force. But on the other hands yeah, he does seemingly do a lot of good for Belters and puts a lot of that money back into the Belter community. He's also clearly very intelligent as shown by the way he navigated the Belter faction meeting. But he's also a bit of a bullshit artist, considering the way he seems to try and manipulate people, like with Diogo in this episode. I think whichever traits you give more weight to when judging his ethics, is simply a matter of perspective.

Varun Laks

I can't believe Nerdy did her like that.....😁

stuart greenley

By far the best post-show discussion! We all see the story differently and that makes it such a great experience! Glad I found you two!

stuart greenley

To that point about Naomi, I think we do see her hesitate. She stares at the gun for a few seconds, before deciding to point it. In the moment, I think everything was happening a bit too fast and she couldn't fully process what she was doing. It don't really think it was a mistake on the show's part though since (slight spoiler for the next episode) the show itself draws attention to this moment and Naomi's thoughts on it.

Varun Laks

I always laugh when reactors automatically think Drummer is a spy for Dawes. He obviously didn't get Fred's secret from Naomi, Drummer, or Holden, if he had, then why did he end up with the lowly Diogo, who easily gave it up. Claroos and Nerdy will remember Camina Drummer after the next episode. But, I'm totally on board with Claroos's assessment of Dawes.

Deana DeWall

Fred's Chief of Staff is Camina Drummer, played by the wonderful Cara Gee.

Bryce Carlson

Fred did not "take Mao's scientists and couldn't get anything from him." He got a technician in Cortazar because Miller put a hole in the head of the ONLY person on Thoth Station that could have identified Mao.

Bryce Carlson

Actually, Clarus has a very important point that was just steamrollered. Nobody in the Belt cares about who it may be on Earth that is behind the protomolecule, however, Anderson Dawes wants to be in control of everything in the Belt and does not trust anyone, other than himself, to know what is right for the Belt as a whole.

Bryce Carlson

"I've never seen Anderson Dawes do anything that bad," although he not only condoned but ordered his thugs to throw Joe Miller out of the airlock when Miller didn't do what he wanted him to.

Bryce Carlson

If you're loving The Expanse at this point you're definitely going to be in love with it as this season continues and especially once you get into S3!

Shawn Anomaly

Generally, all of the Belters live by extremely utilitarian ethical standards and Dawes goes out of his way to show everybody how much he cares so that as a result he never has to worry about a place to sleep or food to eat while the average Belter might, and they are the ones that Dawes targets for his needs.

Bryce Carlson

We were on the road. Next episode will be up on Wednesday like usual!

Nerdy Nightly

9 days between Expanse episodes? What gives?

Jefferson Ogata

The scene between Amos, the refugee woman, and her son and how it affects Amos goes a lot further toward informing his character than anything else we have seen at this point.

Bryce Carlson

I have always considered Anderson Dawes to be a blending of Malcolm X and Don Vito Corleone. So he oozes charm, even when others would rather not be around him.

Bryce Carlson

Your discussion at the end was great. I have always said that The Expanse is smart Sci-Fi for smart adults and the conversations that I have witnessed and taken part in surrounding the show and the books have proven that time and time again.

Scott Fellows

I loved your discussion for this episode and can't wait to watch the next one with you. This show is special in that it provides a catalyst for these deep discussion talking about humanity, human nature, and how we are shaped by our history both personal and collective. The show also has a unique re-watchability to it, many of the episodes have another level of complexity you only understand once you know the story in its fullness, this is one of those episodes. I also love how none of the main players un the system have all the information but we as the viewer have more info than anyone else a know shits about to get crazy because no one has enough info. I love this show god damn much and am thrilled yall are having a blast watching it too.

Daxeah

There is a lot of nation building in this show. Belters are essentially a nation on its way towards official recognision. Currently a colonial possession with many factions in the OPA alone, so various points of views are there. Fred, Anderson, Camina, Naomi, Diogo just represent some aspects of this stellar society of oppressed peoples. Jared Harris as Anderson Dawes - yes, such a brilliant creation of well written character and amazing actor. If you have not seen the Findge he was a great bad guy in that show quite a while ago. Great character, but that is just one of many when it comes to this actor. Bobbie Draper - I found very interesting how the character evolves in the show. She was one dimensional jarhead at the start of the season, a good way to introduce actual, 'full time' (unlike Alex) Martian to the audience. It will be interesting how she changes as a person. Frankie Adams did an excellent job. Funny that apparently there were suggestions that she should have been a blonde woman... The Expanse does diversity right - a Samoan female Martian Marine is an essential, realistic part of world building. Not just some cheap, corporate, supposedly progressive move which could very much end up with a nightmare like Witcher: Blood Origins where token character are there just to make a quota. Not one of the Expanse's characters, even minor ones, are to make a quota on a list and all have enough time to make them interesting in some way. There is a fuck up in the episode when Naomi holds a firearm - one of weapons she hates - without much hesitation. Not everyting was tuned in perfectly yet and mistakes happened. EDIT - My memory failed me when it comes to this detail. @Varun Laks corrected it. Thank you! The Belters are quite a community, aren't they? There is a strong theme of their collectivism confronted with Martian authoritarian state dedicated towards a common goal or Earth's directionless, flawed liberal capitalism. Take care!

Tom M

Oooo I didn't realize that. Funny how we remember people differently based on when we meet them in their journeys

Nerdy Nightly

When Dawes told Holden that he reminded him of someone "just without the hat," Holden had no idea of who he was talking about, since Miller left the hat behind on Ceres when he went to Eros. Holden never saw the hat.
