2024-01-22 21:51:31 +0000 UTCThe purist in me gets bugged with the minute details that were changed. Mainly the fact that Nojiko and the town don’t know Nami was doing this for them. Get you can’t always have a 1-1 adaptation but given this followed the story so closely compared to the other stories and the small details here are so enriching it just stands out all the more. That said, neat detail how they didn’t have Genzo wear the pinwheel in the present day and only in the flashback given his views on Nami.

2024-01-21 23:38:09 +0000 UTCThat makes sense. I have not watched the anime (yet) ... but was able to appreciate the several reveals about the history of fishman-human relations. Oppression creates retaliation. That's what it does. And it does add a depth to Arlong's character. He might be evil, but it's not like he doesn't have grievances, some of which are probably very legit.

2024-01-21 00:03:49 +0000 UTCMuch like the Garp reveal, you're not supposed to know about the turbulence in Fishmen history yet. That comes much later in the series, and is meant to make the audience reframe what they know about Fishmen until that point. But the live action didn't know if future seasons would be coming so they let that info inform the dialogue and performances to tell new viewers, "hey there's depth to this world that you don't even know yet".

I have for the most part been able to not cry while watching reactions to this episode ... I failed watching you guys. I was crying along with you. Great reaction guys! One of my fav episodes, even though its the one I cry to the most.
