Hazbin Hotel Ep 1x5 Full Reaction!

Hazbin Hotel Ep 1x5 Full Reaction!

Comments

Also, something that occurred to me in the last moment where Nerdy discussed the biblical intro being a lie, is that it seems pretty clear to me that--while it might not be a lie, per se--it is definitely a storybook version of the story that Charlie was told as a child that will be exploded and complicated by an adult understanding of the real story.

Josh M covered a fair bit of this, but I typed this up while watching the post-reaction discussion cause I had to get it out of my head, and hopefully it will touch on some additional aspects! I actually agree with Nerdy about the plotting of the show. I do think there is a well thought out plot behind everything, but the show doesn't really reveal much about that in the episodes Nerdy and Clarus have seen so far. Regarding the depiction of Lucifer specifically, I think it does hang together pretty well, even with the expectations Nerdy is talking about. The way I see it, Lucifer is a dreamer who has stopped believing in the dream. I agree with Nerdy about the joke aspect. But beyond that, I actually really like this portrayal of him--in part because it's a subverted expectation--but also because I think it makes sense. Lucifer had pie-in-the-sky ideas that went against the plan of heaven, and when Heaven cast him out and he stopped believing in the plan, he became insular and bitter and has been that way for millennia now. I think that hell is the way it is in part because Lucifer is a neglectful leader. He has holed himself away to design rubber ducks rather than take part in the kingdom he commands because he only sees the worst in everything. He has given up. In the intro, Charlie explains that he was "cursed" to never see the good that came from his actions after he was cast out and fell. Lucifer gifted free will to humanity, and from his perspective in hell only seeing the sinners, does not see the good that came from that action. Charlie is Lucifer's redemption. The dream has passed on to her and she still believes. Charlie can see the good in the sinners of hell where Lucifer cannot. The two of them are indeed very similar and the uplifting end to this episode is because he recognizes in her the dream he lost. At first he is scared for her, because he believes that heaven will reject her and crush her just as they did to him. By the end he is still scared but decides to support and believe in his daughter who is actually the only thing he truly cares for in hell. Ultimately, I share some of Nerdy's concerns about the plotting. I'm really curious to see what Nerdy thinks about the remainder of the season, and where it goes in the future. I think there's groundwork for some great storytelling beyond just the fun characters, wacky hijinks, and great songs (which are enough for me so far, to be clear). I'm choosing to be like Charlie and live in hope.

"The comments upset with you for being a human experiencing art are unfair" is a heck of a line. Props to Claroos for nailing that.

After you finish Hazbin Hotel I'd love to see you react to Helluva Boss.

Having a Dif opinion is fine, its the not remembering or talking over things that are clearly told to the audience the annoys me

I'm glad he's being honest, the fact that they sometimes dislike stuff makes me trust their reactions. I'll take it over fake praise any day. I think he got really excited over what he thought the show was going to be, and is now getting frustrated that image in his head isn't the show he's actually watching.

I think y'all would benefit from rewatching the little intro story at the start of ep 1. Either way, super stoked y'all are watching this [show]!

*sigh* haven't watched yet but I guess this is another "Nerdy complaining about plot holes that aren't there ep"

Hi! Just in case you are interested, some of the information you are looking for about Lucifer, his place in hell, and how it differs from the Bible story is, in fact, at the very beginning of episode 1.

V Joseph

In the intro from episode 1 Lucifer wasn't malicious in giving Eve the apple. He believed in freedom and was considered a renegade. He gave humanity the apple because he wanted them to be free. That was defiant of heaven's order and it allowed evil to enter the world. He broke the world, but it wasn't out of malice, it's because he was reckless and careless. In punishment he was cast down to hell and only allowed to see the evil that came about from giving humanity the apple, never the good. The show says that he lost his will to dream as a result. Lucifer in this world isn't a creature of malice. He's a former idealist and dreamer who was absolutely crushed. At some point his wife left him, he became estranged from his daughter. He has nothing now, just sits by himself in his mansion making his ducks because he has nothing else going on and nothing really to live for. On redemption, Charlie has no idea what she's doing. She has no idea how to redeem souls or what that even is. Listen to what she said during her breakdown in this episode. They've done trust falls, they've expressed their emotions, and it's not working and she doesn't know why. Her understanding of what redemption is surface level only, it's children's tv. But look at how the other characters are behaving. Serpentious and Angel are slowly acting better. They're less murdery, they're building actual friendships, they're caring about people. The hotel is one of the only safe, stable places in hell, and they're chosing to be there, and if you watch them their behavior is improving.
