2024-07-19 19:31:15 +0000 UTCJust some background that's not supposed to be a mystery, there was a religious totalitarian state called the Hierocracy where the Ardents controlled all the Alethi (this was a few hundred years ago). They were overthrown by a conquering general called the Sunmaker. After his death, the unified people's of Alethkar split up into ten nations (ten is a lucky religious number for the Alethi), each with a separate High Prince that warred with one another for a few centuries. Gavilar and Dalinar conquered and subjugated the other 9 nations with Gavilar becoming their first king in hundreds of years. Some, like Sadeas, were early allies fighting with them to create a united kingdom for Alethkar, but they all swore fealty to Gavilar before his death. This is also how the Ardents wound up as slaves, they first enslaved all the other people in the kingdom and then were overthrown.
