The Way Of Kings Ch 69 Audiobook Reaction!

It's a GREAT re-read once you have read the other books in the series, though. So much is laid out and foreshadowed.

I think Sadeas is using his oath as an excuse to grab more power, not being driven by it. Certainly not being driven by it alone. He has a really Nitzschean view of power and society, which is also very common in the Alethi nobility. Dalinar being willing to give up something of status that is precious to him to preserve his own honor is a rarity amongst the nobility rather than the rule.

Part of it is that Sadeas clearly has an advantage over many of the other high princes because he was such an early ally of Gavilar's. He feels like he helped build the united country and has demonstrated his loyalty to it.

You can understand a bit how he got that way. The assassination of his father clearly weighs on him and other than Navani, it just doesn't feel like he got a lot of support growing up. Jasnah did seem to get all the brains and natural leadership from his generation of his family though.

This isn't the best book of the series. It gives you more world-building of a cool new world than any of the others if that's what you're looking for and the high point for me is stark and great. But I think it's probably the 4th of 4. I can see it being 3rd in someone's rankings, but if it's 1, you just love the feel of a new world.

Driving the blade into the ground on first audiobook pass made me go 'holy shit, he's serious." It was a great moment in the first book.

Thank you for all the reactions. I’m glad to hear that you are excited about the rest of the series now.

Getting through the Way of Kings is a tough go. It took me 4 tries to get through; I never hated or lost interest, but it was slow going, and I'd often want something a bit better paced, and then I'd eventually forget about it and start over. At the end, it was well worth the read, and I do enjoy the book more in hindsight and on second/third reads, but it was definitely a slow go first time through. Re: Sadeas, he tries to position himself as a playmaker in the Alethi government, and he successfully does so because none of the other leaders aside from Dalinar give a shit, they're just playing games and sabre rattling over egos. But, like, Dalinar recognizes he's not great at backdoor politicking, and Sadeas stumbles into getting one over on him, because he's too headstrong and arrogant, the epitome of the alethi culture and its failings. None of the alethi we've seen are very tactful politically (even Navani, who probably could have taught Elhokar something, anything). There's definitely more to come in the finishing chapters of the book, but yeah, it does largely just set the stage for Words of Radiance, which is IMHO significantly better than WoK.

That scene with Dalinar and Elhokar was wild, and pretty weird. The king's a massive mess, just a single paranoia-infused corn chip in that skull of his, and if any justice existed in that world, he'd abdicate and just get out of governance. 6 years into this war, and he just refuses to learn and improve himself.

Solo Nerdy reactions over 3 ;) but honestly I love the audiobook reactions. Though if it's too much extra work/ effort I completely understand and want you to have work/ life balance.

The level of planning that sadeas has is like top tier in the alethi court. They're not good at it outside the kholin family 🤣 there are a few exceptions
