I can explain my theory about Dalinar and Parshendi biology after Interlude 1.

There's another important thing about Parshendi biology that helps explain this that we haven't quite gotten to yet. Not what I'd call a spoiler, but RAFO for a little later in the book.

I think this will all make more sense when we learn a little more about the Parshendi, RAFO but it's close.

The painting was fine either way. Still got the commentary and reaction. If you guys want to do it and can do more reactions because you free up more time, I'm in favor of it.

I think Dalinar's confusion about the women wasn't that the Parshendi race had women, it was them being on the battlefield. I think part of them not seeing it was that they culturally keep women from fighting in war and very much partition themselves by gender in a lot of ways, so the Parshendi using women in battle was just culturally inconceivable to the Alethi.

Thumbs up on the painting. Even before you mentioned it you could tell that it was easier for you to stay engaged with the story while you were painting.

I thought the painting was great. It kept me from being distracted while you weren't commenting.

I thought it was pretty obvious from his thought process that he didn't CARE to find out until you saw him actually wondering about it. It was a cool 'huh, they have women?' moment for Dalinar in the previous book.
Not everyone is a curious scholar.
The mini stuff was fine, and if it helped you with your attention span, go for it!

the Kholin family is a lot alike. They have extremely one track mind when it comes to their areas of interest. Jasnah dismissed art as useless to her studies until she saw how good Shallan was at accurately reproducing a scene. Adolin didn't understand value of The Code, because it interfered with his interests - dueling, fashion and good wine, and he was unable to consider them properly for years. Dalinar is a terrible politician for the most part, because he didn't see it as relevant to his soldiering - except for when it touched upon the king's safety at which point he learned enough to manipulate the High Princes with Sadeas.
Dalinar generally has similar attitudes towards anything that doesn't directly have an effect on warfare. That means he misses things that might be obvious or common knowledge. Including the Parshendi gender thing.

I enjoyed the painting! And I completely understand needing something physical to do while listening to an audiobook. I encourage you to continue!

Love the idea of painting minis while reacting. These chapters can be long and it helps to have something to do

I was going to suggest that you need a light or something for the minis. I could tell you were having trouble seeing the figures. But I enjoyed watching the painting and reaction. Worked for me. :)

I think it was great that you guys were working on minis while listening, you still fully react so didn't take away from anything imo!
