Oh, I get it. Partly I think the modern educational system did a terrible job of educating Millennials for participation in Liberal Democratic Capitalism and I feel the need to lecture young people, knowing that they'll ignore me, but it feels good to me.

Watching their book clubs for wheel of time, you'd think Robert was the worst person in the world for his takes on some of the systems in the world, when the ONLY serious social commentary he made in his story was a partial deconstruction of a specific trope.

2024-06-14 14:41:46 +0000 UTCI think Sanderson is criticizing systems that engage in exploitation for the benefit of a few, rather than capitalism, you're the one jumping from exploitation to capitalism, but what you're describing is a lot more prevalent in totalitarian socialism than most capitalist ones. Think of the PRC or North Korea or the Soviet Union. You went right to mining companies operated in the Congo by Chinese companies, that's not a liberal democratic capitalist system. The Alethi system with it's complexity and caste system is closer to Medieval/Feudal India. Think about how bad the average Soviet person had it during 1923-1953 and yet Stalin died in one of his 20 vacation mansions/homes.
