Peeking into the shipyard at an odd angle with most of it obscured by the door is not the same as walking through the massive doors and seeing the entire shipyard at once, or being inside it. To get a full view through the openings beside the doors, they would have to run left and right really fast to parallax their view of the interior. A severely damaged keel is a death sentence for a ship like that, especially when the rest of the ship is also badly damaged, including the body. The keel is the one piece (lol) that holds all of the other pieces in place, because that is where the ribs are attached. If the keel breaks, the entire ship falls apart. It's not like things are nailed together or something. The ship needs to be able to flex, so things are slotted into one another or tied, and held together by tension against the keel. The Merry is sailing because the keel hasn't broken yet.
