Really loving these conversations, I definitely feel like you both have good points

Ruthanne

Oh and Oathbringer. A lot of Chapters will be (hopefully) requested for that.

Nick Garcia Klein

So no matter how evil or cruel their ward is, no matter how much their death may benefit those beneath them, it is always dishonorable to kill them? No matter the extent of any atrocity they may commit like slavery, genocide, rape or torture?

Equation Panda

That's wrong. In WoK Shallan mentions slavery as one possible fate for her family if she fails to sort out their debts, it's just way more uncommon.

Tyrann

bodyguards murdering their wards is dishonerable, even if its for the greater good

David Krantz

There is a legitimate way to get perfect pitch in this universe and I think you guys already know what that is 👀

wartgalore

Well, only dark eyes (and Parshmen, technically) can become slaves outside of the Ardentia so there is a racial component, but yeah, it's not like they were made slaves just because they were dark eyed.

David Krane

A different part of the conversation has made me very excited for when they reach Rhythm of War

David Krane

Not to say that the roman system of slavery was moral, but it wasn't racialized or otherwise based on essential traits. You lost a battle to the romans, if you were in debt or comitted certain crimes, you could be enslaved, but you could theoretically work your way out of it. It's technically better that the american version, but that of course leaves a huge margin for bad.

Carl Philip Steuch

On the slavery in Aleth'kar thing, it is legal, but it is looked down on, and it's somewhat more like the roman version, where slaves have certain rights, depending on the circumstances of their slavery. For example, even Kaladin got wages, though lower than a free man, and a slave can theoretically pay off their bond and earn their freedom. The Shattered Plains are an attractive place for slavery because there is little law enforcement or regulation, so illegal practices(probably like the murder of that sick man while Kaladin was en route to the plains) are easy to get away with, and because of the war camps huge need for cheap labour.

God after this discussion I can't wait for the Oathbringer reactions.
