Nerdy, I prepared you for this lol.
Q: What special talent did the main character of "_Wanted_" (and his father) have?
A: They are flesh and blood humans that can selectively control their heart rate and force it to beat insanely fast. In the movie, this boosts things like their perception/information processing speed, movement speed, focus, and general physical ability.
Q: What is Luffy's body made of?
A: Rubber.
Q: Yeah, but like, what are his innards made of?
A: Rubber
Q: Even his heart and blood vessels?
A: It's just all rubber, dude.
Do the math there. Also, this logic only holds out briefly, as there are upcoming technique that aren't easily grounded like this.

I mean, Luffy has obviously trained on the ship after Aokiji.. because he literally said so. And, again, smart use of his Devil Fruit!

Can't wait for next episodes reaction. From what I remember the gears and level ups are hinted at usually then there is a big reveal and the explanation comes afterwards a lot. I think its probably worth the reveals and what not.

While there are a couple of exceptions, Oda is pretty good about showing the characters levelling up and getting stronger between fights and on-screen so it doesn't feel like the new super powers come completely out of nowhere.

In this episode, Luffy mentions that he wasn't strong enough after his fight with Aokiji. Before he didn't need a power-up because he was already so powerful from the beginning of his journey.
But after Aokiji, he started thinking about how to become stronger. After losing to the CP9, Luffy came up with gear second because their powers gave him this new idea.
I noticed back on the sea train that you didn't pay attention at that moment, but Luffy mentioned for a brief moment that he's got new tricks to beat the CP9.
So to me, his power up doesn't come out of nowhere. It's just something that happened off-screen and was only hinted at.
And don't forget that one of Luffy's greatest skills is to learn very quickly his opponents' weaknesses and come up with a way to beat them.

I remember in previous episodes there were a couple of times Luffy mentioned that he needs to train and that there are new things that he wants to try, but you missed Luffy saying that both of times. Its not just a random level-up.

I think Luffy learns from his fights and is very observant. He has become aware of the six powers though CP9 on what humans are capable of though training alone so he is pushing himself to get stronger knowing he needs to after fighting much stronger people than him. He knows he has to to protect his friends.
