2025-02-27 17:41:24 +0000 UTCI do think it's fair to say that, prior to this chapter/episode, Sanji's chivalry *wasn't* a lie, because this particular bit of character development is mostly a retcon rather than anything Oda had planned all along. But yeah, this is where Oda says "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if Sanji were a creepy perv?" Oda grew up watching Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, and cites Akira Toriyama as his biggest influence. So it's not hard to draw the connection between Sanji and Dragon Ball's "creepy perv as comic relief" character, Master Roshi.

2025-02-27 14:46:25 +0000 UTCThis was arguably Sanji's worst moment in the entire show. It's not the last bad moment either but he does improve a lot in way later arcs. I was kind of dreading this reaction because of it. I think it's easier to accept it if you just recognize Oda is being tone deaf about SA in this arc. It was intended as a gag that didn't land well at all. It was also pointed out to me that at Baratie Sanji didn't know almost anything about devil fruits much (e.g. he didn't know they would make Luffy unable to swim) so this was kind of a plot hole that shows this gag was an afterthought about his character and not something Oda preplanned for him. And without minimizing Sanji's perviness, a reminder that Absalom not only peeped but also sexually assaulted Nami, kidnapped her, and tried to coerce her. So he's still a lot worse than Sanji.
