And yeah, the first time I watched this arc I also thought they were going to pull some twist that the nihilistic twin was the one that actually survived, but no. Upon rewatching, Muichiro, the timid one, was indeed the one that became a swordsman, so no twist. There was also a line said in the backstory where Muichiro in the narration says "during my amnesia I adopted the nihilism of my brother" (something to that extent). So it explains the nihilistic attitude he had before meeting Tanjiro.
