P.S - I don't know if you ever played the Legend of Zelda; Link to the Past, or read the comic/graphic novel, but I get a vibe of that from the fate of Katherine's sister there. Or what the villain did to everyone.

So, in most cases, you happen to have a rival introduced into the story who the main character can't get along with at first. Pokemon's Gary. Naruto vs Sasuke. Avatar: The Last Airbender's Toph in a way. Rivals end up bringing the best out of both characters and eventually come to work together on some things. However... this type of conflict is pretty new. Especially considering the pile of bodies that were due to one of "Zoana's" kind... (I want to see more of her kind. Alchemists, both powerful. Good charisma in different ways. Hm, foxes seem to have a gift for mixing things up.)
