the esoteric background of alchemy is about improving oneself. All the symbols and names used in alchemy are a representation of the different layers of improvement one has to go to become the perfect self, like lead becoming gold. Of course it includes the belief in the occult which is also very important, but you can indeed think of it as a path to become the best version of yourself.
