I second this. Would be interesting to see.

Great podcast! Your back and forth chemistry is really starting to come together. Great info also. I know many things have been stated over and over but I would be very interested to hear what would constitute your guys’ everyday carry. Gear, apps, solid go to’s.

Sorry, on mobile and can’t edit easily: meant to include this link https://lbry.tech/overview

Luke

Thanks for taking the time to reply! 🙂 There are already apps that do that (https://github.com/lbryio/lbry-desktop) but since it’s FOSS you could literally do that. You could (if you wanted) fork the LBRY-Desktop client and create the LBRY-THO app. It would do the same thing but you could have some cool branding on it 😅

Luke

I don't see the resiliency argument though. Yeah my content stays on the blockchain. But unless I'd have my own app that my users would download to always be able to access my content, it isn't more resistant to censorship. I am not opposed to Odysee. I just don't see it as this solution that will fix the censorship problem.

The Hated One

I don't follow your logic on not cross-posting to Odysee because they too are gatekeepers. Not only do you get the chance to access people under a different (and likely more fair/favorable) algorithm, the content would still be accessible directly from the LBRY client or any other open source app someone wants to build to directly access the LBRY blockchain. Thus your quality and important content is that much more resilient to censorship and de-prioritization, even if some of the issues with front-end algorithms aren't entirely overcome. I don't know about your financial side of things*, but the technical side seems clear to me. *you've built a brand and put a ton of work into it so you deserve to control how your content is distributed. From my understanding Odysee also has a viable compensation structure but I am not that savvy on it (nor on YouTube monetization actually)

Luke

Thanks for this feedback. I will definitely tame Closed Ntwrk and make him listen to my commands. He should be more obedient and know his place. I'm gonna spank his ass!

Yes I am totally on the disillusionment side. I don't have much faith in crypto at all. I am not optimistic about and I don't view it as too much of a solution. I feel like the whole project of crypto has been hijacked.

The Hated One

Really Interesting Podcast. Listened to the whole thing and both of you really enriched my perspective on cryptocurrency. This was really in depth and I liked the interaction between you. Helps to paint a more complete picture of the crypto currency and blockchain space. I have to say though that closed network sometimes went off into a never ending monologue where it didn't feel like a conversation for me any more. Just something you might want to improve for your next Episodes. Some way of making sure that none of you are talking without a response for too long.

Hey thanks for your extensive answer to my question! You've done a good job so far of highlighting the negative aspects of crypto, as in the Signal debacle. I'm certainly not convinced that crypto can't have value if used with care and for the right purpose, it's just so discouraging that it has become rife with scams and centralization that basically eliminate the envisioned goal of Nakamoto according to their White Paper

I've thought about this recently. Owning crypto can be considered a conflict of interest. It's a financial asset which the owner stands to benefit if they can tilt the market opinion in their favor. On the other hand, is owning the US dollar a conflict interests? Is being on YouTube and Patreon a conflict of interests? Is being an odysee a conflict of interests? I think in many contexts, you could answer affirmatively to all of these questions. Owning a stock, for instance, is an easy CoI. That's why we don't trust CEOs and shareholders for accurate information and we instead rely on the scientific methods. If I own crypto or receive donations in crypto, there is definitely bias there in favor of that crypto. So maybe it would be better if I stopped accepting crypto donations. However, if these crypto donations are coming from individuals and not corporate interest, then at least there is no corporate influence on the content. Many good FOSS projects and non-profits accept crypto to fund their operation. From my perspective, I don't necessarily see a vector for bias here. Because at some point, if all acceptance of crypto donations is bias, then so is all accepting of any fiat currency too. If the main goal is to eliminate pro-corporate bias, then it's fine to take crypto and fiat donations. If eliminating all bias is the goal, then anything short of a double-blind randomized controlled trial in a quality research peer-reviewed paper published in a credible academic journal is not admissible.

So if you're using crypto to stay objective about various topics, how do you stay objective about crypto?
