What phone do you use primarily?

Let's gooo

Comments

I'd strongly recommend against using a phone made and maintained by one guy, whoever they are. GrapheneOS has a whole team of world class security researchers behind it.

I am using a Brax2 (Android) phone from Rob Braxman and have been for almost a year now after giving up my iPhone. Bit of getting used to moving from iOS but the experience has been very good.

> I haven't set up a way to have private convos with people. That makes sense.

True. But the price of such machines has drastically decreased. One can get a Qubes-capable desktop computer for the same price as google pixel and this has been the case for some years now. Anyways, just mentioning it in case you'd like to try / convert it some time in the future.

Yeah, I was eyeing those actually. The 7a was rumored to have a headphone jack, but I would be rather supprised if google does a 180° on this and include one after all. Tbqh Im not overly concerned about this, with graphene still pushing updates for 4/xl, which reached eol over 2 years ago at this point. Its abit curious aswell though, seeing as they no longer recieve firmware updates, and havent for such a long time. Not complaining though, keeps devices out of the landfill if anything.

The benefit of Qubes is running everything in a VM. It doesn't rely on the kernel to enforce the security model. It does effect performance and workflow though. Makes it very hard to use it on less beefy machines.

I haven't set up a way to have private convos with people. Mostly because I wouldn't have the time to manage that. All of my time goes to research, scripting and editing. It's unfortunate, but I am a terrible 'businessman". Edit: I haven't watched that video. Will return to the topic of Kurzgesagt in the future though. I wouldn't say I am satisfied with the end result, because the response was very divisive. Some people rejected and dismissed all of it, some accepted it by taking away wrong conclusions, but there were a lot of people who did see what I was trying to say. I want that third group to be as big as possible.

What does iPhone have that you are missing from GrapheneOS?

The Hated One

This is the way to go about privacy! You reached a point where you lost some convenience, but didn't backtrack and found a way to adjust your usage without Google Play Services. Also looking forward to the Pixel tablet. Will totally run it with GrapheneOS as soon as it comes out.

I'd go for 6a, 7a, or wait for the 8 series, depending on your wait time and budget. The trend with the headphone jack is a bummer, but nothing that can be done about that other than using an adapter.

I'm on Graphene, btw. Quite good. It doesn't have the same security guarantees that my Qubes system has, but good enough. Profile separation is a bit of a pain but works well enough to mirror my Qubes workflow. I make this more manageable by sharing apps between profiles.

[Unrelated to this topic, but posting here because patreon partially blocks Tor, which prevents me from sending you a private message -- Is there any other means of communication that we can join to talk to you?] Holly sh*t, THO! You made Kurzgesagt do a video explaining their business model! You've probably viewed it at this point. Looking forward to hearing about your thoughts on that. Are you satisfied with the end result? Quite a big feat, to be honest! https://youtube[.]com/watch?v=1x-i9z617z4 (note: I increased my pledge to the top-tier after that investigation... Kudos to your work and passion!)

I can't be specific. I see the same nuances I see on a non graphene os phone. Maybe using graphenes default browser was a bad idea even without giving any personal info or logging into accounts. There was also something else that was a very shocking coincidence but not really a coincidence.

Bought a used Pixel 5A at a great price, since the 6's were already out. It was a good way to start my privacy journey. Installed GrapheneOS, which was pretty easy. Resisted the urge to install sandboxed play services and and use apps that don't require it. It's been working really well for me the last year or so. I don't miss Google services at all. Can't wait for the pixel tablet that I read should be supported by GrapheneOS, based on recent commits.

What vulnerabilities have you seen with graphene?

Harr

GrapheneOS on a 4a for now. Curious about which to get next, with 4a reaching EOL later this year. New models dont have a 3.5m jack, which I really like about the 4a.. Dont really like the trend on bluetooth headsets thats in these days..

I'm using Graphene OS on a Pixel5. Flashed it 9-10 months ago and it's been great. I feel like I've got some control back and I plan on keeping it this way. Cheers all.

I have observed vulnerabilities that are innate to graphene OS. I can only assume that the algorithm is adept at identifying users and with little information. Probably more adept than a real human.

I came late to the Stupid phone party. I use an older Galaxy Note 4 and user replaceable battery and sim card (T-Mobile) were key to that choice. I use it for phone & text 95% of the time. Almost no add-on apps, occasional Google Maps navigation (mostly use passive Garmin GPS), Firefox web access, DuckDuck search. Phone Location turned off except when navigating. I don't stress excessively about privacy and security, but try to be informed and cautious in my tech usage.

Android but I'm planning to use graphene os
