Making a dirty case for digital piracy.

Caption8169 thanks for the pod suggestion

Rights holder, yes that's the correct phrasing. Authors aren't always holding rights to their work. And an excellent point about science researchers. I should have mentioned that.

Also, piracy is not theft. Even if you are against piracy, if you argue that pirates are stealing anything, you are factually wrong. Stealing means you are taking something from someone else, so that they no longer have it. Piracy is more akin to copying than stealing/theft.

Absolutely. I highly recommend the srsly wrong podcast episode on piracy (ep 279) to anyone interested in the case for piracy. They argue that internet pirates are really just criminalized librarians, and that piracy is far in a way a net good to humanity. Artists want nothing more than to share their works with as many people as possible. Of course they need to be able to get by like anyone else, but the current system pits artists against fans while copyright lawyers and rights holders (which are overwhelmingly massive corps) reap the benefits. If we really want to protect artists, copyright is not the way to do it. The episode is paywalled on Patreon, but I'm sure you can find it by other means, and in fact they would encourage you to do so ;). The platforms of freedom episodes are also very good.

Towards the end of the episode you said that copyright laws force us to consume content on the terms of the Author, but I think it would be more accurate to say on the terms of the Platform (and/or Rights Holder) -- and the problem is those terms are very bad. Your favorite scientific research writer would happily give you a copy of their journal article if you emailed them, but the Journal itself wants your name, institutional affiliations, and billing information.
