Encryption works, though. And more secure implementations (i.e. tamper-resistant hardware) makes it harder and harder to circumvent it. It's possible to make end-to-end tamper-resistant cloud storage that would be impenetrable without user authentication (Google does this with TItan M, but not for the Drive data - only Android data). The technology is there, it's just that companies aren't doing it.

With the advent of Connectivity and working in the military the guide was "if you don't want it accessed or breached or read DON'T connect to the internet" That's still the basis of ALL above Top Secret++ systems still now .... If it's out there you loose control and you either are in denial to risks or you DON'T care of it's exposure i.e your cat video collection
