Episode 073 - The Kurzgesagt propaganda: This is how it starts.

This is my first episode on the Kurzgesagt series of podcast episode. Make sure to start with this one as it lays out important definition and differences of financial interests in YouTube videos.

Just like scientists (most scientists only do science there spongers want) and octors.( doctors prescribe drugs with a 50% mortality rate for a disease that has a 1.6% mortality rate) Its acorrupt. Public transit does nothing for rural areas. Or food production. Gates is also after control of the food supply.

I mean it does but it's different. When a company selling a service/product sponsors something, they do it because they want people to buy more of their stuff. But why exactly is a foundation sponsoring something when they have nothing to sell? I think they do it because they want exposure but exposure to what? Their goals, causes and interests. But what if these goals and interests are just some billionaire's personal agenda and they stand to gain influence or make profit off of more exposure to their interests? You see what I mean?

The Hated One

Thanks for this input. I think if you block sponsor disclaimers, then you don't kno who is behind the money, which is more important than knowing that a video is sponsored. Who would you blame though? I don't think creators take all of the blame, I think it's split among all stakeholders. So I do think creators are a part of the problem.

The Hated One

I want to defend SponsorBlock here: 1) You will still notice that the video is sponsored and can go back to watch the segment if you want. It even adds a huge sign like "exclusive access" to notify you about sponsorship and potential issues 2) You are much better off keeping these advertisements out of your mind than watching them to examine conflicts of interests. I'm not sure that watching the sponsor segments are the silver bullet to catch dishonest reviews. Critical thinking and looking for multiple sources should be emphasized here. 3) It can skip a lot of other things not just ads What you are talking here is a general advertisement problem, not a sponsorship problem. I very much want to see every kind of advertising banned but blaming independent creators with full editorial control for the situation are not really a good way of solving this

All sponsored content has an agenda, no? It should be approached that way. The average media consumer doesn’t think about it like we do. I’m always asking myself, what are they leaving out? What are they not saying? I do think that there is no distinction between the kind of sponsors (in regards to sponsored content being a constructed viewpoint). However, there is difference with regular commercial advertising that the network sells to get eyeballs on a product or service.

Bro you can download this entire podcast and double speed in your own app. You don't need YouTube for this.

The Hated One

Do you think there is difference between when Squarespace or Brilliant sponsors a video and when a billionaire's charity sponsors a video?

The Hated One

There is "No such thing as a free gift" is a title of a book I didn't read, but I when it comes to billionaire philanthropy, I think is spot on. These people are donating millions or billions but they aren't doing expecting nothing in return. I feel like this will be my most disliked video but I hope people can hear the message.

The Hated One

Man Im too computer weak atm, podcast should be on youtube unlisted so I can x2 speed it. I have missed a lot of episodes since including the important ones. Sorry if I have to ask this again.

Chiller

Overall, I think sponsored content is fine, but that fact should be repeated often and not disguised or buried in the content. Enjoyed this thought provoking episode!

Someone once told me to act as if everything might somehow end up on the front page of the newspaper. How would you think people would react? It keeps me honest and transparent. I appreciate your grandfather’s efforts.

That’s great to hear! It was one of those moments that made me start thinking “What are you worth?”. I know they say everyone has their price but I’m glad to know he never had his. I think about that when I see YouTuber’s review items they received “for free but are giving their honest opinions”. Related joke that domes up the point: A man asks a woman if she would be willing to sleep with him if he pays her an exorbitant sum. She replies affirmatively. He then names a paltry amount and asks if she would still be willing to sleep with him for the revised fee. The woman is greatly offended and replies as follows: She: What kind of woman do you think I am? He: We’ve already established that. Now we’re just haggling over the price.

I will be posting as often as possible. At least 3 times a week for now. The story of your grandfather is fascinating. Do you think he did the right thing by refusing those companies?

The Hated One

This was a great listen! It brought back a memory from my childhood. My grandfather had worked in a company in charge of sourcing materials that were in the millions. My mother had told me he used to be offered bribes all the time and refused to ever receive one. Me being young asked why he didn’t just take what was offered if it was from the company he was going to choose anyway. I will never forget his response. He said if he ever took one it would be a reflection on himself and how could anyone ever trust him again afterwards. You make many great points and I can’t wait for the next one. Edit: How often will you be posting episodes?
