The use case is that it's better than what centralized platforms are capable of delivering. There is no central feed, no algorithms, no unsolicited content. Just stuff that users subscribe to and content from their contacts/friends. Nothing else. No ads, no tracking, and it works with or without the internet. Centralized platforms would never be able to offer this because of the need for monetization, while a P2P platform would more than sustain itself off of voluntary donations because all they need to cover is development.

2023-08-03 12:48:30 +0000 UTCBut how do you convince everyone to use the imaginary Magic P2P Network? What is the use case? Everyone is on old Social Media and they need a reason to not only convert themselve but also convince all their Friends, Family and Content Creators to move also. I dont think technology like this will solve the Problems that are caused by a Economic and Political System owned by the one tiny Class of Owners.

2023-07-25 14:58:35 +0000 UTCSuch a technology would have to develop and grow counter to the system currently at play. Whatever mechanisms there are that would prevent it (e.g. centralization, authoritarianism, etc.) would have to be completely mitigated by such a technology.

2023-07-25 14:48:19 +0000 UTCWebApps lack proper app signing. It's a major security feature that helps ensure the software is coming from the original developers and hasn't been tampered with on its way to you. Android apps all have to be signed with keys to prevent a whole class of man-in-the-middle attacks that are so prevalent on the web.

2023-07-25 14:46:37 +0000 UTCThe internet firewall of China is more to keep the CIA away from meddling in their affairs. People there are encouraged to use VPNs to bypass it. All my Chinese friends use VPN. The government even provides a list of effective VPNs. Socialism/communism about the people owning the means of production. In a society in which everyone owns the means of production, how these are used is decided democratically instead of CEOs making the decision that will affect billions. Is okay if you don’t like China’s socialism. Every socialism is different. Each socialist country had a different socialism from each other, that is why China broke away from the Soviet Union because they had different ideologies on socialism. The same way that capitalism in Nordic countries is different than capitalism in America. Our socialism just needs to be better by learning from our previous socialist comrades errors, the same way science learns from its previous errors. The solution for these problems is economical because private ownership of the servers gives companies ultimate power.

2023-07-22 16:31:47 +0000 UTCSocialism/Communism doesn't fix the problem. Just look at china's internet its worst than the US. The issue is not economic it's a human nature problem. People like get control and they really don't like losing control. The only real solution is decentralized protocols like email instead of proprietary communication apps.

2023-07-22 14:32:04 +0000 UTCEven if we got the utopian technology that you mentioned, it is not going to work under capitalism since companies will own all the servers. They will do the same they did with the internet. The only way to achieve what you are talking about in a way that doesn’t result in monopolies is with socialism and communism.

2023-07-20 20:05:58 +0000 UTCI'm beginning to see why cryptee went the web app route. It keeps the costs lower and prevents apple and Google from having control over who sees your software. IMO social media should be used as discovery mechanisms to get people to other platforms. Ex. I found out about mastodon via YouTube and it has now replaced twitter for me.
