That is true and it signals how much harm the generative AI hype caused to the entire field. Academia has been using AI for years and it boosted scientific research, but most people are not aware of these positive aspects of the broad term of AI. I personally blame corporate messaging because they intentionally mislead the public by overpomising on something they knew was a terrible product.

The prominent LLMs that spring to mind aren't the totality of AI anymore than Facebook is the totality of the internet. It's difficult to make any categorical statements about an ill defined category.. and I think this problem of definitions is going to create a lot of obstacles to productive dialogue and policy.

2024-08-08 11:16:03 +0000 UTCVery negative for me. Having used Chat GPT, Gemini, Grok & even Canva AI, it can't complete even the simplest tasks competently, even with instructions so clear a reasonably average human couldn't get them wrong. It also always gives me "hallucination" data.
