What we do know: Europe will increase their defence spending. Chances are Russia will respond by increasing their defence spending…

Any peace deal Trump attempts to strike must include Ukraine and be made with Putin’s legacy of destruction in mind, while also aiming to dishearten his future ambitions through strength and threats. Yet he appeared to do the opposite: not only did he sideline other stakeholders, but he also emboldened his actions with apparent impunity and even suggested that Ukraine started the war. If his rapid push strategy of leaving Ukraine and Europe on the sidelines is meant to test Europe’s unity, invigorate their attention to the war threatening its security, and raise pressure on Europe’s major military powers to define how they win back a seat at the negotiation table and contribute to a peace deal, then no positive outcomes, if any, have yet surfaced. Taken aback by Trump’s overtures to Russia over the war in Ukraine, European leaders are yet groping for common ground on how to respond, hindered by domestic politics and economic challenges. The extent to which Trump may alter the dynamics in Europe is still uncertain.

Good Year

The biggest winner are the soldiers and their families. The biggest loser is the US. The further damage on the reputation they have built over 70 odd years is incalculable.
